    Really odd, he does the little Charlie Chaplin duck footed walk, then basically stops so may as well not bother with that bit.

    Then a little shuffle that looks like pretend horse riding and yet he bowls at about 85mph.  The whippy arm action must generate the speed but its bizarre.

    You're not wrong but 2 things to say to that. Hes a swing bowler, yet has never taken the new ball abroad which with balls other than the dukes and away from home effectively negates his skillset. And secondly - he has previously struggled abroad no doubt but just before COVID on the tour of SA he was like a different bowler. Gough was doing a stint as bowling coach and worked hard with him, he said Woakes had finally cracked the differences in bowling abroad in that you can't just put the ball in the right areas and let it happen like you can in England, you have to bowl at 100% every ball. I'm hopeful that continues.

    The reason is that he practiced bowling indoors as a kid, aiming for the skirting board as it was less noisy than the wall.
    The front room wasn't very big so he kind of ran on the spot for some of his run up and bowling at the skirting board is how he developed his yorker.

    Watching the game last night (from OZ), and what struck me most was how similar-paced all of our bowlers were, consistently between 79-83 MPH -and of course all right arm over as well.

    We are going to have to find some variation for over here though, as once the shine has gone off the ball in Oz, that kind of medium-pacers have little effect on quality players, like Smith and Labuscagne.

    With no Archer, is Wood our only bowler capable of high-quality pace? What has happened to Ollie Stone, is he injured as well?

    Olly Stone is out for the summer with a stress fracture of the back. One assumes that rules him out of the Ashes too.

    Be interesting what attack goes to Australia. Could they look at a left arm wildcard like George Garton who bowls at a decent pace? Think Broad , Anderson and Robinson are certs if all available.

    Wood will go as well as Broad, Anderson and Robinson - as will Stokes if back. Depending on the make up of the squad that might only leave one place up for grabs

    I really hope it is Woakes but, for whatever reason, they seem to like Sam Curran. The only thing Curran has in his favour is that he is a left armer but it there are question marks about Woakes in Australian conditions there have to be even more about Curran including 6-352 with the ball in 5 Tests in the last year and a batting average of 14.50

    Agreed there's far too much faffing around. Taking 2 minutes to sort out the field, then changing your mind is another irritation.

    It's a difficult one especially as he now has the gloves. He would also argue that he has the 2nd best Test average in this side (34)

    He was but sadly that is Moeen. Looks absolute class and then has a rush of blood and gives it up to a bowler who really didn't look a threat to him.

    So we're in September and Woakes has faced 18 balls (all white ones at that) this summer. This is someone who has a First Class average of 34 too.
