EFL Transfer Embargo

I was going to comment of the Chef Wendy thread, but why was their transfer embargo secret? If they are being punished for a rule violation, why wasn’t this announced.

A quick search also pulls up an announcement from Birmingham along the same lines. An FFP violation resulted in an embargo that was not announced by the EFL.

A search of the EFL website shows nothing about either of these,

Anyone have any idea why they try to keep these quiet?

    No idea for sure but the thought occurs that if so called 'fit and proper' owners have transgressed then it reflects badly on an EFL who vetted them.

    Not something to advertise perhaps.

    One of the reason, Sheff Wednesday owner picked Meire, she’s proved that she will carry out unpopular decisions. The wendies owner has talked about cutting costs for a while.

    another EFL gem...........cover up wrong doings & even their sanctions, but investigate an owner for buying his players a burger after a game.

    Shouldn't that be, 'some Championship clubs might get less for the players they are planning to sell than they might have got had they sold them before the pandemic, while some Championship clubs will be prevented from signing new players'.  

    I get the impression that the Mail Online has seen one bit of information (ten clubs getting a transfer embargo) and conflated it with a different assumption (that the Premier League will not spend as much as they have in the past on new signings).

    Most of the clubs listed are fairly average or bottom half sides. How many players at those 10 clubs are being hunted by premier league sides?

    I can't imagine top flight sides are queueing up to buy Luton and Coventry players. Article seems a bit over the top.

    I don't doubt that ten clubs being unable to sign new players will have a downward effect on some other clubs' income. But, how many signings were those ten clubs going to make from other Championship clubs, for fees?  I imagine it wouldn't be many.  No club - as far as I can see - is being prevented from selling players.  So calling this 'financial Armageddon' seems to surpass the truth. Considerably.

    Many of these sanctions appear to be only administrative breaches of regulations that the EFL didn't realign with the Government's relaxations of filing rules.  They broke the rules, but not the law.  And it has nothing to do with how much money the owners may have.

    If you read the article, their penalty was for an admin mistake, and will soon be corrected, ditto Huddersfield. Luton and Coventry's issues sound pretty minor as well

    But if they can't buy, they may be reluctant to sell. I'm not thinking so much of other Championship clubs but clubs like ourselves. If we hoped to sign fringe or youth players with the idea of developing them as we (hopefully) get promoted something like this could be a blow.

    I find it amazing that more clubs haven't gone into administration over the past year. No fans yet player wages are still being paid in full.

    but this is the preposterous soft porn peddling swivel eyed bigot sheet with no regard for the truth on matters of any real importance
    simply not an organ of record on anything
    Add to that the compliant gutless muppets at EFL and this ain't going to have any discernible effect
    A few clubs might be restricted to not adding to their squad numbers and/or increasing their reported wage budget for 21/22 over their reported figures for 20/21.  A very few players might be available for slightly more reasonable transfer fees if any EFL clubs are in positions to enhance their squads.
    Given the financial situation all EFL clubs are in compared to 12 months ago, transfer and wage spending will inevitably be (relatively) depressed for a window or 2.
    Looking in from out here, it will be impossible to know anything tangible but Charlton could be one club in a slightly better position this summer than last.  That of course is more to do with having an outwardly stable & resourced ownership than possible fire sales at a number of championship clubs that are now reaping the rewards of years of reckless/rule-breaking overspending.

    The EFL didn’t follow the government extension and the embargo will be lifted once the accounts are filed

    Cardiff City will be allowed to pay fees for players in the January 2024 window after the length of their EFL transfer embargo was reduced.

    Cardiff were placed under an EFL embargo because they defaulted on payment of the transfer fee for the late Emiliano Sala.

    The embargo had been due to run until summer 2024, but has now been cut by one window.

    Reading remain under a transfer embargo with another EFL breach included, failure to reporting and pay HMRC. They also have until June 29th to respond to charges of failure to pay wages on time and in full, and club owner has been individually charged too.

    You’d expect them to have a heavy points deduction this season.
