Because LB thought that his ability to improve players would change him for the better. He also tried it with Williams and Oztumer but. once again, his frustration at their inability to learn to do the defensive side of the game came to the fore.

Maddison’s stats were phenomenal but clearly he’s in the midst of some kind of breakdown.  We only took a small pint of a year contract so it was a relatively inexpensive gamble that didn’t work.

there is a hugely talented player in there but sadly the devil inside him is the more dominant force.  Such a waste but he has issues and I hope he gets his shit together for his child’s sake

Not that long ago there were plenty of people on this board complaining we'd let him go

In the last year 14 months Maddison has gone from playing in the Championship to League 1 to League 2. He's started the grand total of 11 games in that time. 

Now I'm not LB's biggest fan but, when you see that Peterborough are 2nd in League 1 without him, that Hull are top of League 1 without him and that Bolton have picked up 29 points out of 33 without his valuable contribution of no goals and no assists, one really has to question whether all four of those Managers are wrong about him. 

Perhaps the most telling article I've seen about Maddison and what has happened to him in the last year is from the time he talked about being released by Newcastle:

Instead of a meteoric rise to Europe's elite, Maddison fell from grace. Released by Newcastle in 2013, he had a short spell at St Johnstone in Scotland, before finding himself out of work and out of prospects.

It took some soul searching to get back on the right path, particularly after being shown the door by Newcastle without making a senior appearance.

"They said my attitude wasn't good enough. They always said I had the ability, but they were always worried about my mental state," he recalls.

"I'll admit it myself. I didn't really work that hard. I thought I had the right to be there.

"Growing up I was told I was always going to make it: 'You're one of the best players, you're going to make it'. I felt I deserved to make it, like I didn't have to work hard. But you do have to work hard.

"I learned from my mistakes. I'm a lot different now."

Somehow I really don't think he has learned from his mistakes.

Or he did learn from his mistakes and in the last 18 months has regressed back into the same behaviour. 

Something many of us do. 

I agree Dazzler. But when the desire goes, the fire goes and you revert to type. Maddison just wants to turn up on a Saturday, show that one or two bits of brilliance and glory in the adulation afterwards. The trouble is that it's no good showing that if for the rest of the game you're standing with your hands on your hips especially in games when the tricks don't work. No Manager will put up with that - at any professional level.

The really really sad thing is that it's a lot harder for players to do some of things that Maddison can do but it's a lot easier for Maddison to do what they can. He just refuses to do so. And that is unforgiveable in my book because he's been stealing a living for the last year or so.

Watching the highlights from Leicester's game yesterday and there was a player playing who was, like Maddison, released when he was young by a pro club. He worked in a factory whilst playing Non-League and went on to become an England international and one of the greatest Premier League strikers of all time.

He's scored just one goal in his last 15 games. But will he be dropped? No he won't because he works his socks off for the team every single game. He's still a distraction for the opposition even when things aren't going well. Once again he didn't score yesterday - but he provided three assists. 

If only Maddison, in his prime at the age of 27 had the same desire and work ethic of Vardy who is now 34.

What happens when his team mates see him not putting the effort in (in training or on the pitch)?

Just as Bowyer isn’t the manager he was 2 years ago, Maddison isn’t the player he was while at Peterborough.

He'd still start for me mate. It's a no arguement as he's not playing for us ever again however, we need to win games and bar Albie Morgan we have no flair, creativity, or ability to score from long range.

We have lots of very fit Vet players all back tracking, tackling, huffing and puffing keeping the mighty Oxford, Shrewsburys, Burtons, Gillinghams at bay..........

Can't win games setting up to stop teams scoring.

Agree the balance isn’t right, I’m just not convinced Maddison could be the answer.

He’s on his third club since leaving Posh and despite dropping to the fourth tier still isn’t performing.

Can’t all be down to poor or negative managers can’t it?

I do agree mate he is vastly underperfoming and IMO it's quite clear it's a mindset issue. 

However, give me 15minutes of him on the pitch in the second half for a must win game than Smith, Pratley, Watson, Gilbey (I'd add Shinnie in there but he does get played in the right position and given a licence sometimes)

Clearly, and understandably by the sounds of things, MM's career at Charlton was over under Bowyer. But if we are in league one still next season, and MM has not totally given up I imagine NA may be the sort of manager to get the best out of him.

Mmm will be interesting to see what NA does. 

I still can’t forget the pretend injury he sustained when he tripped over a divot. Not seen anything like that ever before.

That we will never know...hinting at people faking health condition cost Piers Morgan a job. 

Think there was some validity to the claims... Not publicly, but at least questions asked in private between the manager and the clubs medical professionals.
