Reports are that he's died aged 66

One of the most exciting fighters ever - that war with Hearns and being robbed against Leonard are two of my strongest boxing memories as a fan in the 80s

    Came to my notice when cutting Alan Minter to ribbons and the English crowd rioted .. Marvelous Marvin, pantomime villain and a very good middleweight champion.  R I P

    Look up his fights with Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard on YouTube, warrior doesn't come close to describing him. Hard  hard man and amazingly aggressive

    This has shook me, and I genuinely have something in my eye.
    One of the greatest pound for pound from the incomparable sport of boxing the world has ever seen. I was at Wembley the night he beat Minter and little did I know what a stellar career would follow. A very disturbing night though - I, like the entire crowd, had come to see their hero Alan Minter, I had followed Boom Boom from amateur and throughout his entire career. I saw him live successfully defend againt Antuofermo and expected him to beat Hagler. But what followed the fight was nothing short of a disgrace - how Marvin got out of the ring alive I will never know. I've never been so ashamed of a crowd.

    The first 3 minutes of his fight with Hearns was arguably (and a very strong argument) the greatest single round of boxing ever witnessed. A closer fight was with Duran and although a good but not a great fight it proved that we were witnessing a era blessed with a group of superstars.

    I confess to being a Leonard disciple and my view is, I'm sure distorted by that, he beat Marvin - just. A draw maybe would have been the correct result and an immediate rematch - but alas that was never to be.

    One of the Four Kings, and deserves his place in boxing history as a powerful, aggressive, fearless warrior.

    RIP Marvellous - never to be forgotten.

    The older I've got the less interested in boxing I've become and that's in no small part due to the absence of absolute superstars and masters of the sport like Marvin. RIP.

    My favorite fighter of the 80s. He was robbed in the Sugar Ray fight, imho.
