For those who don't know, he was a Formula 1 and American Cart driver, who was involved in a crash in Germany in 2001, following which he had to have both legs amputated. As a fiercely competitive elite athlete, he switched very successfully to a career in handbiking, in which he is now a four-time Olympic champion.
On Friday he was involved in a crash with a lorry in Pienza, Italy. He was flown by helicopter to Siena, where he was operated on, and is now on a ventilator, in "serious" condition, in intensive care.
He's certainly a fighter. I wish him the swiftest, fullest possible recovery.
