First Car memories

Just wondered if anyone would like a trip down memory lane.

What was the first car that you owned?

Please share any happy or tragic memories relating to your ownership.

Mine was a 1983 Mk1 Daihatsu Charade XTE.

The three-cylinder engine sounded like it was wrong. Loved it and drove me, mates and girlfriend all over the country. It rusted like hell, even at 6 years old it had holes in the door you could fit your hand through. Only lasted me a year until the head gasket went and I traded it in.

  • Driving this at 80 on the motorway felt like re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. Loved it though.
Lovely bit of Italian design. My mate had the 4x4 Panda with bullbars and spotlamps.
  • First car I had on the road was a 1971 Mk3 Cortina around the end of the 70s (although did own a Mini before that which wasn't roadworthy)

Was a complete heap and loads went wrong with it including the clutch going and the prop shaft falling off on the Sevenoaks Way.

Got hit by someone in Bromley which basically wrote it off but the guy who did it had false plates on and gave me made up details so that was pretty much the end of it.
  • I remember the manual choke. Was told the story of the lady who thought the choke was a handbag holder.
  • I was very lucky. I worked for Classic Papers in Woolwich Rd and they wanted me to be able to drive, so they paid for half my lessons and my first car was a brand new company Ford Escort that I drove out of the dealership in Lewisham... That was 1988.
  • Mine was a 1.3 Morris Ital, what a rust bucket could see through the floor and I put something in the boot and it fell through. 0 to 60 if you were lucky in 10 minutes. Terrible car. It was similar to below, but not in anywhere as good condition. Mind you that was over 40 years ago now.

  • Yes, it was a Morris Marina with a new grill. It was called the Ital as Austin Rover claimed it had been redesigned by the Ital design studio but I think they only did the front grill and rear lights.
  • 1984 Ford Fiesta 1.1 Ghia, absolutely loved it.
  • 1964 Morris Minor 2-door deluxe. Deluxe meant it had a heater and two-tone leatherette interior. It never let me down, helped in winter by the fact that you could always use the starting handle. The previous owner had repaired the wings with a combination of baking foil and filler. Happy Days!

  • Datsun 100A in silver - mine was exactly like this one apart from the roof rack and spot lamps - I hated it at the time, but look back on it fondly now - I could beat Mini 1275 GT’s off the lights in it
  • 1974 mk 1 escort for me, got hugely uprated for about 6 months and then totalled it and stuck the 2 litre engine in another one.

    Sorry, I should have said 70 :)

I too had a Mk 3 Cortina, (1973 1600 XL),also written off by an uninsured scumbag who vanished without a trace. Clifton’s roundabout A20. You always remember your first love.
I also had a Mini in lime green, discussing colour but  the car remains one of my favourites. I love one nowadays just to tinker around with.

  • My minivan.  Another rust bucket, sub frame needed replacing soon after I bought it.  The other unusual feature was that it refused to go up steep hills when any passengers were aboard.  Quite amusing when I returned home with mates from the Grasshopper.  They had to walk up Westerham Hill and meet me at the top, quite an achievement after a heavy session.

I also recall it having twin tone maserati car horns as did a mate on his mini.  We lent on these rather too much one night when returning from the Trafalgar Square bierkeller.  So much so in fact that a copper pulled us both over.  We both took the initiative and got out of our cars.  The copper asked, 'Have you boys been drinking?'  Quick as a flash my mate said 'We've had the prescribed officer!'  He gave us a bit of a lecture, took one more hard look at the each of us and then told us to fuck off home.

    Phew.

  • 1970 Mk2 Cortina 1600 Super in "silver fox""
That was in1976 ,  even though only 6 years old , I had to have so much welding done to get it through a couple of mots,  it was a rust bucket!
None the less I have very good memories of it and it definitely had 'character '.
  • Bye the way , I meant the car was 6 years old , not me !!!
  • Think I had about 6 cars in my first year of driving (1990).

First was a N plate Mini (the old N at the end of the reg!), a rover 216, a capri, a fiesta and a Peugeot 205. Oh the days of buying a car for under £500 that had a few months tax and MOT left

    Ford Anglia 105e - 1965 C reg, in navy.

Paid £90 for it in 1974 and the insurance cost £100!

Reg was BCG811C - the joker at the insurance office on Plumstead Common Road immediately after he gave me the quote said “is it fuel injection”. I was not impressed!

  • Here’s Sprout, my first car.
    I’ve only ever owned 2CV’s.
I haven’t had one for six years now 😩😩😩
Used to drive it to work everyday on the A2. Hilarious how angry people got when I overtook them in it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who is the young lady ?
  • First car was a much-loved black Hillman Imp - EWC871B. I can remember the reg of all my cars until about 15 years ago then the mind is blank.
  • Pale Blue MK 1 Ford Capri for me.

    Very sharp.
  • Pale Blue MK 1 Ford Capri for me.

Picture is of a Mark 3 Capri ?
  • My dad got a new car so gave me his old Astra.
First motorway driving experience was going to Sheffield in monsoon conditions when both wipers flew off when I put them on to the quick setting.
That was a life and pant changing experience.
  • Mine was a Triumph Herald
  • My first car was a 1962 Vauxhall Victor in the most sickly green imaginable ....although bought in 1978 ..bench seats, column change ...it had character. The bench seats were great until one day they came off their mountings as I sat down making me go arse over tit backwards leaving me in the back!

As a footnote repairs were undertaken by Eddie Cecil bless him ,erstwhile chairman of LAC rovers. He was having a rest from driving at the time and was working from lewis coaches yard ..he got the seats welded back on but managed to set light to the internal carpeting...great memories..whilst the car was in dock a lot of the time had some great times in that car
  • Another Cortina owner. I acquired my Dad's old Mk 5 rustbucket rather than it get scrapped. My friend put his foot through the passenger door by gently pointing out a rust patch with the toe of his boot.

First car I bought was a crappy secondhand Vauxhall Nova. It had had a sunroof put in after purchase, which leaked and dripped water on my head when I went round corners.
