Amazon Prime scam call warning

Got an automated call this morning stating that Amazon were going to take 39.99 from my account in order for my account to continue and if I wanted to talk to someone about this I should press 1. I pressed 1 and after a few minutes during which the Indian accented caller got increasingly agitated with my efforts to get him to prove he was genuine he hung up.

I have googled it and confirmed this is a scam affecting different parts of the country over the last few days.

    Never press 1 or any other number when you get these calls as it may invoke prime rate call charges!  No decent provider will ever call you with such poor security application - they are all scams!

    You may wish to consider checking if you were scammed with a prime rate charge for pressing 1.

    Any suss phone calls like these, just tell em 'hang on a bit I'm on the Gary and I've gots to wipe me arse, gimme your name'n'number and I'll call you right back'  caller puts the phone down smartish

    Got one this morning from someone sounding suspiciously like the "woman from Microsoft", who apparently now works for Euromillions.

    I never bet, so didn't bother to wait for her scamming lies before hanging up.

    Microsoft, BT, HMRC, Euromillions, now Amazon - who next?

    I also received exactly the same call informing me that Amazon had taken £39.99 from my account on Tuesday. I hung up and haven’t heard anymore.

    I keep getting the HMRC one where there is an arrest warrant issued in my name.

    Also last week or so I get Visa/Masterdcard telling me that a payment of £600 is about to leave my account.

    I thought the Amazon Prime scam was where they get you to sign up for 3 months free, give your card details but not notify you when your gratis time is up.  Or the one where they pay bugger all Corp Tax.

    I check my junk email box sometimes and on some occasions I get 50 emails a day, and at least half of them are scams of some sort. I probably get a PPI/accident phone call a couple of times a month too.

    With junk email filters and all these news stories it makes you wonder why people try these scams anymore.

    However, there are some people that still fall for them, which is really worrying.

    I've had a couple of the "we've got into your computer, taken control of your webcam and will release footage of you watching porn unless you pay us in bitcoins" one a couple of times. Which would be unbelievable even if my laptop HAD a webcam.

    Have had a couple of scam calls from my 'internet provider' in the last week.

    The last one was from a Leeds 'phone number.

    The phone (not mobile) was ringing every morning at the same time. Always a different mobile number or 01522 number. I eventually answered it to hear a recorded message saying it was BT and my internet had been compromised etc. The the 'press 1' to speak to someone. I have to say I was quite worried but wondered if it was a scam. Luckily didn't press it. The next day I answered it again, this time someone from a 'call centre' at BT - same story. Mr T said you can get recordings of call centre noises as part of the scam. Anyway, they are still phoning. Mr T says to just ignore it but it's starting to worry me. As its from a different number each time how can I stop it?

    Got exactly the same call this morning, but didn't bother pressing 1.

    Anyone can report spam and nuisance calls to the ICO and they will investigate. Companies can receive huge fines for unsolicited marketing.

    You can't, I think most people get these calls very often.
