He’s also quintessentially English, and yet he's been played by a Scot, an Irishman and an Australian.
I realise this this thread is more about passive aggressive irony, but there are two points I’d like to make - firstly, judging a film’s plot point before you’ve seen the film is ridiculous, and secondly, saying Bond can’t be black is nonsense. By that token, you’re implying that you’re more worthy of the role than Idris Elba, because you are white.
You’re suave enough? Good looking enough? Ripped enough? You’d be able to tick off that list above? Or Elba can’t purley because of the colour of his skin?
How anyone can make that claim and not consider themselves a teensy bit racist bemuses me.0 -
even more pertinent, James Bond is purely a fictional character envisaged by Ian Flemingse9addick said:

How anyone can make that claim and not consider themselves a teensy bit racist bemuses me.He was originally, though. Fleming only added the Scottish-Swiss stuff (as well as a sense of humour) after the Dr No movie had been made. Fleming had said Connery was not what he had in mind, but he was impressed by him in Dr No and obviously had the sense to see which side his bread was buttered. So even Fleming reinvented Bond to suit the times...0 -
The REAL James Bond (SC), used to live on the A227, between the A20 and Vigo.......not a lot of people know that.0

There are so many ludicrous comments hiding beneath irony and comedy in this shit show of a thread that I can’t honestly tell if this one is serious or not.Showmetheway2gohome said:I wonder how long it is to we have a white actor playing the black panther or kunta kinte to balance it out. Drama is about the suspension of disbelief.
I mean if you want to believe for a while that Spiderman, or The Black Panther is actually a thing, then believing in Sid James as the Black Panther, or Orville as Spiderman is in the same kind of territory.
If the quality of the actual work grabs you, then isn't that job done?0 -
Haha no it’s not! Casting is all about finding an actor who is believable in the role. Can a black actor be believable as James Bond? Absolutely. Can a woman? I don't think so, Bond is defined as a womanising male - but introducing a female 00 agent is intriguing and could lead to what all studios dream of - a shared universe.seth plum said:Drama is about the suspension of disbelief.

Casino Royale did a great job of introducing a strong, capable woman who made Bond look like an idiot, and use her own sexuality to get what she wanted. This move could work in the way Eva Green’s character did.
Meanwhile the likes of Black Panther and Shaft are defined by their cultural heritage. Implying that balance is required when only 2-3 films in the all-time top 100 are led by black actors is nuts, and it’s even crazier to say anybody can play a character whose skin colour and cultural heritage is inextricably linked with the character.

Why not give the James Bond gig the Elba and the Luther part to a white actor? Then maybe get a whole new film franchise going for a female Secret Service Agent, in her own right, as I know for certain there are plenty of female operatives across the MI5 / MI6 etc.0
-
I mean the last time the films decided to have a non white female take up a field agent role she ended up accidentally shooting Bond and deciding she'd be better off as a secretary.1
-
Never seen Luther so no idea if his race and background are relevant. If not, sure he could be a white actor. But why are you asking that? Can we only have one black actor in a leading role at a time?0

My only contribution to this thread is to say that the anagram of Gok Wan is
Go Wank.3 -
Even Shakespeare cast a black man in a lead role over 300 years ago.0

It can seem whatever mate, but some of you do tend to pull the old "ist" card out at the first sign of a presumed white bloke having an opinion on anything other than the topic of a football supporting "white bloke".JiMMy 85 said:

I don’t know why Dave thinks Bond has to be white, and I don’t know why you’d suggest Luther has to be white if indeed the original actor plays a black Bond. Neither of you seems keen to help me understand your opinion.

Everyone in the selection process should be lauded for their undeniable courage and bravery in appointing what will be seen as a controversial decision in this age of middle aged toxic white masculinity.
Anyone speaking against this truly inspirational casting should hang their non-progressive heads in absolute shame.
All those in support should be rightfully commended for doing so and for being such wonderful human beings. Such amazing people.
You see, this is the sort of misogynistic poppycock that needs to be eradicated. By force if necessary. There's absolutely no reason why people should think so differently and have such polarising views or opinions on something that can only be seen as positive.

For a while now, I’ve been thinking of doing, ‘The life and times of Sir Trevor MacDonald’. I know who I’ll get to play Trevor as well. Morgan Freeman will play Trevor in his well known News casting days on the News at Ten, and Richard Blackwood will play a young Trevor trying to get ahead in journalism. I weighed up Will Smith for a young Trevor, but I thought that would be too obvious.0

It is really a matter of personal perspective, and I repeat if the quality of work grabs you job done?
I saw a nice comedy called 'Red Top' I believe with Nigel Planer as Rupert Murdoch and (an excellent) Stephen Mangan as Tony Blair.
Worked well for me as I bought into the show and the satire.
I remember seeing a very good King Lear at the Young Vic, where Lear was played by a black actor, and his daughters were white. Now a central dynamic of Lear is the relationship between father and daughters, I remember that I bought into that (found it believable) without fretting about a black dad with white children.0 -

Showmetheway2gohome said:Watched shaft last night really enjoyed it Jackson is great in it. But you couldn’t have a white person play the roll because he would not be able to say the n word.
I used to give a bloke a lift and we had this debate after Ron Atkinson got sack from sky.
He said it is unacceptable for a white man to say the n word but acceptable from another coloured person. But could not give a reason or explication can any of you millenniums explain this to me Seems hypocritical to me.
Its like that as well my kids love that Drake fella. Seems nice bloke very generous but the only words I can seem to comprehend in his songs are n bitch. How does this fella sell records. Why doesn't this get censored yet you listen to Elvis Costello’s Oliver’s army’s and it gets bleeped every time.
so could say Justine Bieber sing a cover of a Drake song and would it be acceptable for him to sing the n bitch word.
Explications welcome thank you
The explication is the reclamation of the word in many a nation.0 -
