Next season, a disaster waiting to happen

  • Relax, we will go up this season, new owners announced as we lift the play off trophy.  Our only worry next season will be how many points we win the Championship by and how many we knock past Millwall and Palace.
  • If there is still no takeover because RD refuses to swallow his pride and accept a realistic price for the club...

What if he gets tired of losing £10m a year?
What if he gets to thinking there might be another way to cut his losses?
What if that leads him to liquidate the club and sell off the assets for whatever he can get?

If that sounds far fetched, remember we're talking about a raving lunatic here.
    What assets are they then?
There's The Valley and the training ground to start with. Not much value without planning permission to redevelop them, but like I pointed out, RD doesn't do rational.
What do you think makes up the vast majority of his ludicrous asking price? It certainly isn't the playing squad.

If I had to guess I would say recovery of four years worth of operating losses.
  • Jason Euell in Charge.

Phillips + 10 others mainly young players like Reeco and senior players like Pratley left.

7k crowds who only go to slag off the latest scapegoats.

Yes only an ostrich could disagree with that unfortunately.
What makes you think Phillips will be here, just because he signed a contract. If someone comes in for him, Roland will take the money.

If you don’t think it’s anything to worry about you clearly haven’t seen what we’ll likely be left with. If we don’t go up this season or get a takeover done I’d be surprised if we even stay up next year.
Serious question(s) - how many players do League One clubs, who have been in L1 for a few years tend to have signed up with multi-year terms left on their contracts? Seems to me the normal contract length in this division is two years, so a decent chunk of your players will be out of contract every summer. Additionally, if we were to be promoted to the Championship wouldn’t having greater financial flexibility due to not carrying too many of the current squad (most of which I really don’t think could compete at that level) actually be a good thing?

I’m not crediting Duchatelet with any sort of strategic genius here, and not at least tying the manager down is bad form, I’m just not certain it’s the calamity that many are making out.
If we had a sane, reasonable owner this would be right. The trouble is we don’t and the fact that he’s willing to selll Karlan shows that he still hasn’t grasped that we actually need players capable at this level if we really want to go up. Come the end of the season if we don’t go up (which is looking increasingly likely) we are then trusting that he’ll resign all of the out of contract players and coaches, ignoring players who will probably have no interest in signing eg. Williams.
At that point as we learnt over the past few seasons we’ll probably make a maximum of 2 ‘decent’ signings then have the rest of the squad filled with youth and inadequate loans. On top of that let’s say Lyle ends up with ~15 goals and inevitably gets out POTY there will be a lot of interest in him and there is no way that Roland is turning down £1m+ for him.
  • If the (word we are not allowed to use) is still here next season the club will die whatever division we are in.
Can you explain your logic please ?
You are saying Charlton will go out of business next season if RD is the owner.
Perhaps, you're just being overly dramatic, although I understand where you're coming from ?

Can I live in your world it seems to be so much better than mine .
You wouldn’t be eligible for your freedom pass though - although you have had 15 years worth of free travel from it so far though.

    Not worth worrying about yet.

Totally disagree- it certainly IS worth worrying about! Time to withdraw one's head from out of the sand methinks.
I've got bigger things to worry about. It's plainly obvious if RD is still in charge next season will be shit.

Nobody knows what will make him go?

  • Gawd please please please we go up this season if not it will be a bloody orrid time with players, Mgt out of contract etc.......... Unless of course we are sold to others who want progression and upward movement of the club/team. RD has really shown his spitefullness, with a 2 finger salute of his old wrinkled hand to those who dared question or protest against his awful football socialist experiment, Belgian Bastard.

My Grandad a Dunkirk veteran never liked the capitulating Belgians and told me so on several occasions.
  • Apart from Stella Artois and excellent Chocolate I can think of no useful reason for their existance(although Bruges is a lovely city)

I'd add Jupiler to that. I love that beer!

I was trying to be optimistic !
  • Have we ever had a similar situation where so many players would be out of contract in the close season?

1924 when we had to sell a player to Fulham so we could pay the rest of the squad.

Ps. I'm doing this from memory from the last time I was in the museum so there could be an accuracy issue with this statement.

Henry will check the validity of the date but it stuck in my mind, that over the last 100 years we have had to sell players every few years.

I think we still have those nice table cloths that RS got in for the canteen. They’ve hardly been used either.

Im thinking that this season is probably our best and only chance of promotion with RD as owner.

With all of the players out of contract in the summer, and a good chance of Lee and JJ going we could be left with less then a skeleton of a first team set-up to build on.

Whatever manager takes over (assuming Lee goes) would have an impossible task of assembling a squad. RD will only allow freebies and loans, and will probably make the budget even tighter. We could end with the Blackpool/Riga scenario from a few years ago, panic signing anyone who can kick a ball. What kind of team would that result in? At best youd be looking at a lower mid-table finish or worse.
He ain't even allowing freebies now, mate.

They're Roland's losses, caused by his own incompetence, stubborness, and general f***wittery.

Why should someone else pick up the tab for him?

Goal nets, corner flags, floodlights  that sort of thing.
