The Cars You Have Owned

1984 Vauxhall Astra 1.3. Olive green on the outside, a festival beige of on the inside. Inherited from my Granddad in 2000 when his wrists got too weak for a car without power steering. 2000 - 2003 B72 KMY
1998 (?) Vauxhall Corsa 1.4. 21st birthday present. Owned 2002 to 2004 Extremely basic even for the mid 90s. Under powered. Preferred the Astra, but then your first love always has a special something about it. Fobbed it off on the missus when we moved in together. N96 AUY
Vauxhall Carlton saloon 2.0 auto - briefly owned in 2003 to transport me and 4 uni mates to Ireland for our geology field trip. Given to me by my uncle was getting a new BMW. We broke the thing and it literally started smoking like crazy as I pulled into the driveway at the end of the trip, like it was telling me it got us home but now needed to die. No idea on the plate.
1996 (?) (another) Vauxhall (another) Carlton saloon 2.0 manual given to me by my dad when he got a new motor. Did the job for a while, was a fairly dull car but comfortable. Owned 2004 to 2007. L546 something.
2004 Seat Toledo 1.9 TDi. Loved this car. First one I actually chose and paid for (not something I should grumble about). Regretted getting rid. Can’t remember the plate though. 2007 to 2009.
2009 Golf TDi estate. Company car, preferred the Toledo but the benefits of the company car were too good to turn down and it’s was more practical for my work. 2009 to 2011.
2011 moved to Canada. Needed something cheap to get me strarted here, namely a 2002 Ford Taurus 3.0 V6. Large American saloon. Smooth and comfortable but cheaply put together and handled like a boat. 2011 to 2014.
2014 to present, a 2014 Jeep Cherokee 3.2 V6. SUVs make sense here in the winter and this is a nice vehicle, but I do pine for a better handling car, although there are hardly any corners here so handling is not a major consideration. Number plate? CAFC!

  • Full list of cars I have owned

    End of the list

You beat me to it. Never had a car, always had a motorcycle.
  • First car I owned was a white Ford Escort - reg NAM 4X - in 1990. Was offered money for the plate, which I stupidly refused.
  • Back in the day, seventies basically, you could always get at least £50 scrap for your car. Also being member of the AA was handy (relay).
So my brother would buy old bangers for a couple or few hundred quid with an mot. Third party only insurance, the AA for 'servicing'. No worries about damage or being stolen. Run them until the scrap yard beckoned, sometimes 3 months, sometimes even a couple of years. Very cheap motoring.
Army guys of four or so stationed in Wiltshire, they would all be going on leave to scotland. High fare. They would get an old banger for 50, then relay with the AA back to Glasgow with their gear. Much cheaper and more convenient than the trains.
  • Lupo light green - Ugly first car but inherited from the sister when i started learning 17-18
Mini Cooper 1.6 - light blue with white stripes - 18th Birthday present (Topped it a few months before my 21st and wrote it off)
Audi 1.6 limited edition 2008 model from new - Black - Currently we still have this in the household but its a 2nd car for my stepdad, was bought with majority of money for the mini
Seat Leon 2.0 tdi - White , my Current car very decent runner so far, had it early 2017
  • 2 Ford KA's, both pieces of shit, both cheaper than my current bicycle, and both with a lower top speed.
  • The ones I can remember - in order.

Ford Anglia 105E - first car
    Ford Cortina MkII - 1600E
    Triumph 2500 PI x 2
    Lotus Elan +2S 130/5
    Ford Cortina MK III
    Mini Metro
    Rover 416 (4 door)
    Rover 416 (3 door)

    Rover 75
    Jaguar X Type
    Jaguar XK8
    BMW 5 Series Saloon
    BMW 5 Series Touring

Probably missed a few early bangers!

  • H reg white Micra - ex rental, slow. Good car.
H reg red Micra - sister of above car. Served me through university and beyond. Badly maintened and exploded.
Mazda 121. Basically a 125cc Fiesta. Nippy. Badly maintened and exploded
Vauxhall Cavalier. Once was red but had turned pink. Hefty. Sold when I went away.
Nissan Sunny. K reg. Taken from mother in law. Only car like it not driven by a middle aged Asian woman. Slow and like steering a bus.
Nissan Almera. X reg. Green. Current car of 7 years. Only done 80k, of which I've done about 60. Previous owner presumably old and looked after it. I use it like a dodgem car because I can. Increasingly expensive to maintain (though actually passed its MOT this year).

I'm not really a car man.
  • Peugeot 205 1990-1992
    Ford Fiesta 1992-1995
    Fiat Bravo 1995-1999
    Ford Puma 1999-2003

  • - Austin Allegro - They say green is an unlucky colour for cars. This one had a few problems, so never had a green car since.

    - Renault 18

    - Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6L

    - Two Ford Granada 2.0 Ghia's in succession

    - Audi 100 Avant Quattro when I lived in Brussels. Used to love driving this down to Luxembourg for work trips - went like the clappers! Also a Chrysler Voyager as the family car as had 4 young kids

    - Mitsubishi Starwagon - when living in Jakarta. Heap of crap but again needed something to transport family of 6 and better cars would have cost the earth in Jakarta. If I remember correctly all the parts were shipped over from Japan and then the cars were assembled in Indonesia - therein was the problem!

    - Renault Espace and a Vauxhall Frontera

    - BMW 318i

    - Audi A6

    - Range Rover Sport (current car) - 60th birthday present to myself three years ago. First time I have owned a diesel car. They say timing is everything! Lovely car and great for long motorway trips. A pain to park in the small bays we have in UK car parks. On at least 2 occasions have had to ask my my wife to slide in the door and back it out when someone has parked so close on each side that I couldn't get in.
  • Passed my test in 2003...

    My three cars were all Volkswagen Golf Mk III's;

the first (white) failed its MOT after a few years so sold it on Ebay after two years
the second (blue) I only had for a further two years, went into the back of someone so had it written off
the third (red) I had until 2013, broke down on me coming home from Hastings one day so scrapped it because it was needing too much work to it

Currently on my fourth car: Honda Civic 2.2L Diesel which I bloody love yet has also cost me a small fortune in repairs of late
  • Ford Fiesta - (old) S reg. Bought from my stepdad's nephew with what must have been a dodgy MOT as it failed on literally everything other than the windscreen wipers the following year
Vauxhall Cavalier - B reg. Loved this car! Some pikey arsehole nicked it from outside my house in Sidcup to save his bus fare back to Foots Cray. Police found it outside his house the next day but as it was so old it was considered a write off as the scumbag had attempted (badly) to torch it.
Austin Maestro - temporary vehicle following theft of the cavalier. Bought off my mate's grandad to tide me over until I could get something better.
Vauxhall Corsa - L reg 1.5 turbo diesel. Only small but went like shit off a shovel. Second favourite car.
Peugeot 205 - 51 reg. Small and a bit crap if I'm honest.
Ford Focus - 09 reg. Nice, reliable, decent sized car with enough poke to make it okay to drive.

    And that's it so far.

My first .cars were several motorcycles.
First car car was a Citroen LNA 11E.
In those days Citroen had best suspension. Mondeos I have had have the capacity of a van. Best city car my automatic fiesta.
My wife had a Micra from new lasted 17 years.
  • E reg Black Austin Metro. 1.3 litre. Jesus, how did I not die in that car? Had that from 17-21. Got £200 trade in for it.
P reg Turquoise Vauxhall Tigra. It looked good (in my 21 year old head) for a couple of months then realised it was the most inpractical car ever. Had that from 17-32/33ish. Sold it for £450 on ebay and the fella who bought it said he'd service it then sell it on in Holland where the MOT rules were not a vigorous. It only had 78k miles on the clock so it had some life left in it.

Then went without a car for 6 years and replied on my bicycle and public transport to get me about as couldnt afford to pay a mortgage and run a car at the same time living on my own.

Met the new Mrs, moved in with her, then thought I'd buy my own car again. Bought a 6 month old 64 plate Ford Focus Titanium X. Lovely motor, a really nice drive but only done 8,000 miles in it in 3.5 years so decided to sell it as it was sitting on the driveway more than I would drive it.

We're currently driving the wife's Hyundai IX35. A very nice drive. Its being sold second week of March after our new Volvo XC90 arrives. Currently sitting on 49k miles, 63 plate, 2.2 diesel. Anyone interested? Falls foul of the ULEZ...that'll be a no then lol.

  • Austin A3 was my 1st car, loved it but a pile of shit I might add. Happy memories though.

Thinking of getting Mercedes m or g models

  • 1966 - 1948 Ford Popular 0 to 50 (top speed) in 1 hour. Braking at over 40mph meant the brake pads rebounded back and the brake pedal, connected by wire rods, bounced your knee into the steering wheel.
1968 - Mini - Rusted like mad and clutch plates wore out after a few weeks of pit stop pull aways.
1970 - Triumph Herald convertible. Fitted twin carbs and had the head shaved to.increae compression, a wannabe Spitfire. Went round corners like driving a springy bed.
1972- Triumph Spitfire. Loved it but front wheel kept coming off when you braked, the splines on the racing wheel fitting had worn flat.
1974 - Triumph Herald - Dog bought from a “friend”. Disaster.
1974 - Ford Corsair - Another dog from another “friend”. Was a Mk4 automatic that had been fitted with a Mk 1 starter ring.
1975 - Hillman Hunter GT - Bought at auction best bargain I ever made. Lovely to drive.
1977 Citroen GS Estate - First ever car I had with air con. Quirky but loved it.
1979- Citroen CX - Bitten by Citroen bug. Floated over the ground, kids always car sick. Called the “sicky Citroen”.
1982 - Citroen CX Safari . Needed more room for growing family. Was black and often mistaken for a hearse. Friends borrowed it when moving house.

Since then been supporting Germany’s car industry and currently an Audi Q7.

  • Austin maestro - old, with moss growing out of it but with only 30K miles on the clock, gift from my Dad
Peugeot 205 - small, shit on motorways but I quite liked it
Toyota Corolla 2000 - loved this car, super reliable
Jag estate 2005 - like a jag grafted on to a mondeo. What was I thinking? Powerful on motorway, shit for urban driving. Getting rid this year but haven't decided on replacement.
  • If I listed all my cars I’d take up a few pages! Tempting though.

Missed a Triumph Spitfire we had for about a year from my list. Was kind of a Chelsea blue colour. We had our first born in the back behind the two seats when we had a short break in Scotland. Remember my wife changing his nappy on the boot.

    1972 Ford Escort 1100l
    1973 Ford Escort RS2000
    1988 Ford Orion
1993 Honda Accord (amazing headlight sprays that attacked the car in front with a waterfall)
    1996 BMW 525
    2016 Hyundai Tucson
    2017 Hyundai Tucson
    2018 Hyundai Ioniq

Wish I still had the RS2000 so badly.
  • Test passed in 2005. Pretty boring in all honesty.

    2005 - 2009: Fiat Punto
    2009 - 2012: Renault Clio 182 with a upgraded Milltek exhaust (don't judge me)
2012 - current: Toyota Aygo - Had to be sensible when buying a house with the Mrs. Still own as a run around.
2015 - 2018 Mercedes A Class - Hideous thing. Absolutely offensive to drive.
2018 - Current: Audi Q2- bought it for the Mrs when we found out she was pregnant as wanted something easier for her to get the baby in and out of.

    2007 Golf

I quite liked my Orion! Admittedly, it was after spending several years driving cars that had holes in the floor and would only start 30% of the time.

When it was going, it was a lovely car to drive but I had so many problems with it. Driveshaft seals went and dripped oil on the driveway, brakes started to bind, had an electrical issue that drained the battery within 48 hours etc.

They're actually worth a bit of money now, nowhere near RS2000 levels but they are creeping up.
