Shrewsbury v Charlton | Sat 12 Jan | 3pm KO | Match Preview, Predictions, News & Views

Shrewsbury Town v Charlton Athletic
Saturday 12th January 2019 … 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Anthony Backhouse (Cumbria)

Introduction

Despite the continuous noises being made in the background its not been a bad start to 2019 for the Addicks; two games in having played Walsall and Sunderland (both at the Valley) and we find ourselves undefeated with four points, performances appear to be stable and there could be arguments that Charlton deserved more last weekend. Yet we can’t dwell on past results though, its onwards to the next game and our first on the road in 2019, it’s a trip up to Shropshire and Shrewsbury Town this Saturday as we look to keep this run going!!

The Opposition
Name: Shrewsbury Town | Manager: Sam Ricketts
Ground: The New Meadow

Ask any Salop fan if they thought that this season would be similar to the last and you’d probably get few agreeing with you – Losing your best players and manager to the Championship is always going to be a tough ask and that showed at the start of the season with Shrewsbury’s first win only coming in mid-September. Yet under John Askey the club showed promise and it was only thanks to a late Karlan Grant goal that saw the Addicks victorious at the Valley in August.

Relegation has remained a concern though and despite picking up a further two wins in October it would be curtains for John Askey – Ironically that decision came just a few weeks after Paul Hurst was sacked by Ipswich Town leaving you wondering if there would be a quick reunion, that wasn’t to be the case and Shrewsbury made the brave decision by turning to yet another Conference Manager in Sam Ricketts from Wrexham.

For the new man it’s been much the same story (proof that changing your Manager isnt always the root cause of the problem; just ask Hull City!!) – Just the one win has been achieved coming at home against Coventry yet once again the inconsistencies of teams at this level have allowed Shrewsbury to slightly pull above the relegation zone, although with just three points between them and the dreaded dotted line, I don’t see this being an end to their difficult season in transition!!

Charlton Team News
Its as you were really in regards to the squad… Our New Year began with Jamie Ward and Jed Steer returning to their respective parent clubs – It meant that against Walsall and Sunderland we were a player short yet with Jonny Williams incoming it at least meant we had options from the bench. Having had a week training with his new team mates you’d expect the Welsh International to now take his place in the starting line up

As already mentioned; with Jed Steer being forced to return to Aston Villa it meant we were lacking an experienced Goalkeeper; Lee Bowyer though has wasted no time in bringing in another Welshman in Chris Maxwell; signed on loan till the end of the season from Preston North End; Maxwell is certainly no stranger to this level having played two seasons with Fleetwood before his move to the Championship, the big interesting point about the team sheet on Saturday will certainly be around who starts between the sticks!!

Phillips
Dijksteel | Bauer | Sarr | Solly
Williams | Bielik | Pratley
Fosu
Taylor | Grant

Substitutes Bench: Maxwell | Stevenson | Morgan | Purrington | Marshall | Ajose | Clarke

Prediction
This might not be as straight forward as it appear on paper… When you look at the form guide there is only one winner: Charlton, yet Shrewsbury arent going to lay down and accept that, they’ve drawn the last two with one of those coming at the Stadium of Light – Our record at Shrewsbury is certainly nothing to shout about, our 2-0 win there last season being just our second ever win in Shropshire, the other coming in our first ever trip up that way in the old Third Division in 1972!!

  • I think we will be just too strong for them. 0-2
  • I would play Morgan ahead of Pratley.
  • Comfortable away win 4-0.
  • I can't see Williams being ready to start. I could see Lapslie coming in as he's a bit better defensively than Morgan, but I don't know how much he's trained over the last 2-3 weeks. So it could be same as Saturday, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But hopefully in the next cuople weeks we'll get the likes of Cullen and maybe Reeves (haven't heard the diagnosis on him) back to bolster that midfield and add a bit of quality, plus get Williams and Lapslie fitter.

I got the impression from Bowyer that Williams didnt start against Sunderland purely because he'd only just joined so hadnt had a chance to get used to the way his team mates play etc. - Dont think fitness will be an issue for him as again Bowyer mentioned he'd been training in Surrey every day and had been playing for their U23s
  • Great preview to prepare us all for the nice long drive out to the far far west ((:>)

Shrewsbury have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Dave Edwards. He'll probably play alongside Greg Docherty, the tough Scot on loan from Rangers.
In defence they have Beckles and Sadler, the hardy perennials, alongside Luke Waterfall (yes, him again). But as @ForeverAddickted writes, the Shrews are having a poor season and are not in good form right now. They should be there for the taking.
Like a lot of clubs in what has been a closely fought season, they don't score many and don't concede many, conceding only one goal more than us but scoring fourteen less.

There was a lot of ill feeling between the clubs during last season's play offs, they just did us, time for revenge and even more importantly three much needed points, BUT it will not be easy .. come on youse Addicks !!

I'd play Solly in his rightful (pun intended!) position and Toby Stevenson on the left as I think he's done well. Would start with Lapslie over Williams as I don't think he's ready yet. Great cameo last weekend, and obviously very talented, but looked very rusty. Clarke on the bench again and, hopefully, on for a final 10 minutes. Thought Bowyer could have made better use of fresh legs last week. Predict a 0-2 result.
Edited after the signing: I'd put Purrington straight in!
  • We should win this, but after last year i have it in my mind they are our bogey team. Frustrating 2-1 loss :(
  • Need to get all three points here by hook or crook.
  • Replaced Lapslie on the subs bench with Pennington

With it being Thursday I'd be surprised to see the new loan start, with the added depth on the bench now I think it would be a good choice to give George a little bit longer to recover from his second concussion

  • As I'm going to the match I'm hoping for three points and I reckon we will get them.3.1 Charlton
  • 2 -1 Charlton , Grant and Taylor with our goals.
  • Solly will surely be RB.
The bloke from Rotherham at LB.

Maybe, but he's joined ~48 hours before the match so he might have only one proper training session with the team. Could see Solly starting on the left and then moving back to RB after Saturday.

Also, for what it's worth, I think Lapslie will be on the bench and Stevenson dropped, assuming Lapslie is fit and has recovered from his head injury. I don't think we'll need two specialist LBs on the bench (I know Stevenson can play CB but still).
  • Battling away win 1-2.
  • 1-0 Charlton. Tough, Physical game but we will nick it I think.

    1st round on you Blackpool

Sort of game we’ve got to win if we are still interested in autos. We could also do with cementing our play off place as our nearest have some games in hand. I’m going for 1-1 but hoping for better.

Solly will be at right back, Purrington will be at left back, and Williams will start.

My preview and prediction to come later.

this 1-2 win, Taylor and Fosu

Good write up as usual FA, my only differences is that I am sure Pennington will start, Solly as RB and Lapslie on the bench instead of Morgan and Dijksteel on the bench. I think Williamson may change positions with Fosu. As I said FA, practically the same as your team

For all our injury issues, we have having to leave people off the bench, which is a positive sign.
  • 2 -1 Charlton , Grant and Taylor with our goals.

That's our problem. Too reliant on the front two scoring. We need others to weigh in with a few goals. Also we need to start stronger away from home. How often have we found ourselves trailing and then burst into life with half an hour to go? If we play like we did second half last Saturday then we should get the points. Pretty sure our new guy will slot in at left back enabling Chris S. to revert to his best position thereby giving us a bit of balance at the back with BFG and Nabby in the centre. Lot's of choices for midfield with - for once - LB having an abundance of talent. The front two obviously pick themselves. OK, I'll take a chance - 2-0 to us. There, that's put the mockers on it!!!!!!

  • I won't forget how some of them wallys acted last season and I won't forget how 50/100 of them treated some of our fans just trying to get away from the ground. I hope we tear them apart and push them further down the table. I hope our players remember how their fans acted towards Bowyer as motivation and of course I fully hope Lyle Taylor proper rattles their cages as he does most teams.

I'm going 3-0 us and a dwindled crowd compared to last time as the majority of their part time fans will be at home watching their usual team like Liverpool or Man U on the box instead

Brilliant post! Hopefully you will be bang on the nail.
