Dead ball takers

I don't recall a Charlton team where the takers of dead balls are so varied and unsettled

Ignoring the Checkatrade, 3 different penalty takers in the league (and Taylor has been on the pitch for the ones Fosu and Grant scored)

And as for corners and free kicks, since Cullen's injury it's anyone's guess. We had Ajose taking them on Saturday - shades of Harry Kane taking corners at Euro 16, while Lapslie took them yesterday until Ward came on. When Reeves is back from injury, maybe it'll be his turn next...

We should have enough quality in open play in this league for it not to matter but i must admit there is a Holmes shaped hole in our set piece play in the last year.

Holmes, Jacko, Yann... it's depressing now when we're awarded a free kick 25 years out and have NO expectation that it will lead to something

Holmes' corners were terrible in his last season

I actually like the fact any of our players can and will take dead balls. If he wasn't so adept at getting on the end of them I'd like to see Aribo take more.

Were you not impressed with one goal nicky’s horrendous array?

Karlan is very dangerous around the edge of the box - we just don’t seem to get many in that sort of area

Also, Jackson only ever scored like 2 free-kicks...and they were both winners against promotion rivals. I think <3 Freddy Bulot <3 was the best we've had recently

I can see the sense of Ajose taking corners; he's as likely to clear the first defender as the rest of our players (50:50 based on last Saturday) and it's not as if he'd be likely to score.

The quality of corners in all football is very, very poor these days.

JBG was a top drawer free kick taker

    Agreed.

    Adjarevic was another good one.

Going back, Mark Robson and Colin Walsh were both good at corners and free-kicks (less so at penalties in Walsh's case!)

I remember Aribo's first start under KR, when he was brilliant with his delivery, setting up 2 or 3 goals with his dead ball delivery. No idea why he isn't taking them now

Nothing beats the layoff to big Jay Boothroyd on the edge of the box. Guaranteed a sneaky deflection. Used to love El Karkouri specials as well, best was against Blackburn for losing my shit, and his hammer against arsenal

Probably one of the very best in the Premier League as a whole for me

Bloke was almost taken from the halfway line!!

He was good but now it's probably because he's one of the better ones at heading them in and they want him in the box.

With Taylor, Bielik, Pearce and Bauer (plus Naby) we're not short of height though

All of which have been out with injury recently so the plan was made in their absence...

Aribo's height sees him more often used as a target, or decoy, for dead balls.

And its not like they don't have time to practice them. 5 days a week training. Shouldn't take much to A) decide who is the nominated dead ball specialist....and b) practice until perfect.

Until this is achieved I will be giving both the players & LB pelters.

    Professional sportsmen....gah !!

For the record I don't equate a "dead ball specislist" as a penalty taker. Super Clive was one of our best penalty takers, but you wouldn't have him taking corners.

Strikers should take pens (although Ray Stewart & Stuart Pearce would disagree) & a midfielder should take corners & free kicks.
  • Lookman’s corners weren’t great either.

Even if we had somebody he’d probably get rested every other game because he was tired from having to take free kicks the previous match...

I think i read in a report re Burton match only 3% of corners result in a goal ... might as well just boot it straight off for s corner.

That would be a goal kick...

Not if you kicked it out behind your own goal...
