Fabulous player was Sam who inspired me to become a right winger in my playing days.
He scored 24 goals from the wing in one season.....some achievement that.
He was Scottish, a handsome looking chap, small and slight of build with jet black hair, busy, fast and tricky on the ball but like most wingers back then would get a nose bleed if asked to retreat to his own half in order to defend.....No way boss.... I’m a winger!
Sadly, like Johnny Summers, he died young at the age of 44.
Used to travel to The Valley on his Lambretta and would often stop to pick up fans waiting at bus stops on their way to the game.
Incidentally, Johnny Summers would cycle to games and training from his home in Catford.
