It depends what happened beforehand imo. The "shoplifter" may have twatted him first, so he may have been acting in self defence ?paulie8290 said:

So a good 1 in poundland Catford last week, a bloke was caught shoplifting, his girlfriend got out but before he could leave the security locked the door and waited for police, she was standing outside begging security to open the door and let him out, but he never did2 -
