Saw the Real Thing live supporting David Essex in Carlisle in 1982.
David had given them their big break a few years earlier and they supported him and then acted as his backing group.
And yes they did appear at the Valley before a game.1 -

I also remember them performing at The Valley probably about 15 years ago. Not really sure why it happened but it was enjoyable at the time!1
