Would you revert to a dumb phone?

I consider it all the time, problem is What'sApp and social media.
I'd never get hold of any friends or family.
I'd love to be able to though.

Strange question.
You if want to, do it.
If not, don't.
As you've said you use Whatsapp and social media on your smart phone it clearly has a purpose for you so keep it.0 -
what about the porn?8

Would you revert to walking instead of driving?
I consider it all the time, problem is going long distances and carrying stuff and people.
I'd never be able to go to a place that's further than I could walk.
I'd love to be able to though.5 -
I only really use my phone for: Calling | Texting | Maps | Internet | Reading | Music
If I could have a phone that did just those things I'd probably consider it1 -
Just out the phone on vibrate and ring it.cafcdave123 said:what about the porn?

@Chizz not an equal comparison.
@Henry Irving I wasn't asking for opinions on what I should do I was asking if others would do it.
@cafcdave123 At least there was one serious answer. You'd have to use either your imagination or get a tablet with data or a dongle.

I do sometimes think it would be a good idea, to be free of all this stuff.
Hence my post about phones etc being god!
I might go on a retreat over the Christmas period, where all gadgetry is not allowed. I imagine it'll be difficult initially but it also might be liberating!

Progress is progress. What is nice to see is that tariffs in particular usage abroad is getting cheaper.
We seem to have a regulations that the phone companies are taking seriously.0 - Sponsored links:

Surely we are only slaves to phones, drugs, alcohol etc if we don't have control over them. Just say NO

I would never give up having a smart phone. It does so much that I use every day.
Most importantly it enables me to run my business anywhere.2 -
The chess tournament would take forever.3

Would very much consider having one for holidays, but day-to-day: absolutely not.
Only thing stopping me is not committing to the idea, and that I use my smartphone as a camera. If I had a good actual camera, could see myself doing it.2 -
The analogy stands. Walking is generally preferable to driving, but there are some reasons why a car's additional features are beneficial, when compared to walking.Dazzler21 said:@Chizz not an equal comparison.
In the same way, some people may prefer a dumb phone (although I can't imagine why anyone able-bodied would), but a smart phone's additional features are beneficial, when compared to a dumb phone.
For the avoidance of doubt, I wouldn't revert to a dumb phone. There would be no advantage in doing so.1 -

bit of a random comment there? what relevance does being "able-bodied" have to owning a phone?

nope, do absolutely everything on my iphone1

Dexterity. I bought a large-digit dumb phone for someone who had suffered a stroke. Other than for that reason, I can't imagine a good reason for owning one.cafcdave123 said:Chizz said:

Cost will be a factor for some which is fine or just want to make phone calls and send texts.Chizz said:

I know someone who doesn't have a smart phone and it's a pain (for me) that I can't include them in whatsapp conversations but it is their choice.1 -

Yes i could turn the phone off and stay at home but then I'd also have to switch the TV, computer and wear a blindfold, it's impossible to get away from the phoney Christmas dross and cheer, I especially loathe it. Hence a retreat would take me away, momentarily from all that.1 -
I don't need to revert, as that's what I use now.4

So turn off the TV and computer.sillav nitram said:

I love Christmas.
I'm not bothered about all the phoney child in a manger, three wise men stuff but the real spirit of Christmas with the food and drinks and family and presents and football on Boxing day is great IMHO.
I don't like reality TV or talent shows so I walk out the room, don't like jazz, prog rock or heavy metal so don't listen to them. Don't like rhubarb so don't eat it.0 -

I've never made that many calls on my phones, but find the other features really useful. Indeed I'd prefer a smart phone that couldn't make calls to a dumb phone that could only make calls!0 -
No way1
-
Well unfortunately I don't have any family and that's why Christmas is difficult for a lot of people, perhaps if I did, then I might think differently.
I did enjoy the food but as I don't eat meat or drink anymore, my choice I know then a lot of that's gone out the window.
But more importantly, for me personally, I'm trying to remove myself from a lot of what our "look at me" society worships and going on retreat may help me.
Not for everyone I know. I just hope it will be an interesting challenge and with a bit of luck a rewarding one.4 -
