RIP Walter Becker (Steely Dan)

My bucket-list Steely Dan gig at the O2 in October won't be the same now.

  • Plan for this evening - the album 'Aja' - lights off, headphones on. The music lives on.

    Oh wow!
One of my top three bands of all time.
The Royal Scam......Can't buy a Thrill......Gaucho......skiing with my headphones on listening to them many many a time up in snowy sunlit mountains.
Absolutely superb musicians and composers, coupled with sublime arrangements as well as weird and sometimes unfathomable Los Angeles street talk lyrics.
    RIP....Walt....RIP.......and thank you so much.

one of my VERY favourite bands .. mind you, Becker has looked ill for the past 40 years .. R I P
  • Fuck this is tragic, thankfully I did get to see them.

    RIP
  • RIP, one of those bands where you forget how many of their tunes you know.
  • My all time favourite band. Aja is just an incredible album.
    RIP Walter.
It seems that he has been missing from SD's recent gigs - i assume that Donald Fagen wont do the O2 now in October.
  • Steely Dan made diverse and interesting music. Walter Becker leaves a body of work that shall last and last. I shall enjoy it again and again.

"I struck a match against the door of Anthony's Bar and Grill".

"Local boys will spend a quarter, just to shine the silver bowl".

"He has a scar across his face he wears a hearing aid".

"Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail."

Tragic news . So many great songs . The three night blues fest at the O2 I at the end of October involving Nile Rogers , Hall and Oates and Steely Dan has been ruined. I have tickets for all of them and was planning on dining at the Gaucho restaurant on the last night in honour of Steely Dan and their great album of the same name.Big loss .
  • RIP Becker.
    What a great musician...

For me there's Steely Dan, and there's the rest..
  • Woke up to this news this morning. Some friends had invited me to come over to the UK for the 02 gig but it was a little too far. I was waiting for the Asian tour!

Great band, great songwriter, so creative and original.

Not sure I'll play the whole box set tonight but certainly part of it will get an airing.

    RIP
  • Slightly off topic but The Nightfly by Donald Fagen is a great album too
  • I'm assuming the O2 gig is cancelled?
I read somewhere that Donald Fagen had been touring recently without Becker.

Not really off topic, as Becker has helped in the production of 'The Nightfly'.
Since 82 I haven't stopped listening to it, have transcribed most of it on to my piano...

this line taken from Kid Charlemagne .. based on a true story about a SF drug merchant .. contains my favourite geetar solo at the end by the superb Larry Carlton .. the one in the middle is pretty good as well

I really like this .. could be a SD album, Fagen uses all the same top session men ... BUT there is just a little something missing .. could it be the influence of Walter Becker ?
