Charlton blog: This is one of the Addicks’ most important summers - Roland Duchatelet and Katrien Meire can still get it right

The end of the football season for some is a breath of fresh air, a time to relax and re-energize for the upcoming nine months of ups and downs.

For some it’s a chance to see the failures they have been a part of, promising much but giving little. But for Charlton Athletic football club, this summer is the most important one they have had for years.

Following a season, which initially promised so much with the appointment of a British manager and a number of British players, it ended with fans worrying about relegation. It had us wondering why, with the calibre of players Charlton had, couldn't we push for promotion?

Bring forward Karl Robinson. Alas, he has not had the greatest start in SE7. He is like marmite with fans, many love his passion, while some think he is the stereotypical Scouser. But what we do know, is that he has experience of winning promotion to the Championship.

Now, Karl has the chance to put his stamp on Charlton, with his love of wingers, be sure to see a few tricky, fast and sometimes irritating players brought in, along with trusted ones that know the system he likes to play.

His summer is going to be frustrating, exciting and he will feel every emotion a person can feel with targets missed, targets won and planning for the upcoming season… let’s all feel sorry for his wife right now!

Karl has said he knows the players he wants - but who will leave? He’ll have to dig deep to find quality replacements (or massive upgrades in Roger Johnson’s case).

The summer for the owners will show intent to get this club moving forward in front of adversary from the tame protests of last season and before. Charlton chief executive Katrien Meire will need to make sure that every deal counts and Karl is given the full support to get what he wants.

I for one believe this will happen. In some fans’ eyes, Meire will never do right. But if this summer is a success, she will be one of the main people that made it happen, even if she doesn't receive the praise. We will have to see what the summer holds.

Oh the joy to be a Charlton fan these days - happy summer and good luck with the bi-weekly trips to Bluewater with your partners. And remember… August is three months away!

Isn't this just click bait? Put up a poorly thought out article that seemingly supports the owners (at very least, gives them another chance) and then watch all the outraged vinegar pissers incredulously flock to your news site. A news site that isn't actually giving any news just ill founded views.

Writing crap to get the newshopper website hits?

Seems to be common for the NS at present.
Their FB page is full of clickbait.
  • To be fair to him his paper would be in a bit of a pickle if they slagged the club off and were refused access to the club or the players as a result.

He is factually correct. RD and KM can still get it right. I can win the lottery, just because I haven't bought a ticket for over ten years I could still pop into a newsagent and buy the winning ticket.

What this, and similar, articles do demonstrate is that nothing that is written by these bottom feeders can be trusted. Not only do the club use these papers to get out their message (sometimes a dishonest message) but they will never be bullish enough to print something that will upset the club.

Years ago a group of bloggers were invited by the club to be given gossip and insider info in exchange for publishing misleading things from time to time as a way to 'leak' things that could turn out to be incorrect. It is naive to believe that the club don't engage in this kind of thing now.

I have sympathy with the journalist. He needs the club to like him and he needs something to write.

He's not a journalist, he's a fan - News Shopper publishes (or certainly used to publish) an article from a Palace, Millwall and Charlton fan every week, they're not paying him for it. Think the News Shopper has published some decent coverage of the protests, so maybe giving this chump some airtime is their idea of balanced coverage.

He's got some front referring to the protests as "tame". National and international coverage, including featuring on the front cover of Sweden's main football magazine, over £50k raised, supporters travelling to Belgium to embarrass Roland at home - there's nothing tame about any of that.

cant really see the issue, the guy has an opinion and has stated it without being rude.

I don't agree with his opinion and I am anti regime but I do think we are in danger of becoming a bit over the top with anything slightly supporting the regime.

Of course the writer is clueless, he's writing for free for an organisation that's sacking journalists and running its titles into the ground. He probably has "mug" tattooed on his forehead.

Quite a concern when you see the high cost of 'non-playing' squad members going into next season.

And the only way out is to pay them off, another high cost, or loan them out, albeit we will still contribute to their wages.

Once again, we see why we need the right people in the SMT to negotiate contracts. Not sure how much leeway this gives Robinson, but it must have a severe detrimental impact.

Give Katrien enough transfer windows and eventually she might not totally cock it up.

Difficult when you've turned that monkeys room into an NHS call centre though.

As I've said before , they've walked in and caught the neighbour hanging out the back of the Mrs for the sixth time , she admits she's made mistakes and would like to continue with the relationship , these lemmings all look the other way and say yep let's give her another chance

Be careful what you wish for. She saved you when you were in debt and unemployed. She's building a fantastic new play area in the garden for the kids. If you break up you might end up getting together with a criminal.
