Two versions of the same song. Listen without prejudice and say which you prefer and why.

Forget any other versions including the Wailers live version.

Do you prefer the 1973 Wailers version (still just the Wailers not Bob Marley and the ... then) or the 1974 cover by Eric Clapton?

I am a massive fan of God, and he does a cracking live version, but Marleys is the best, he wrote it, he lived it, a white boy from Surrey cant compare to Marleys, there is no better version IMHO...drink from the source.

    The Wailers edging it.

I thought of you @greenie when I posted this. Suspected you'd go for Slowhand but I was wrong.

    Wailers....

Its a really good cover from Clapton but it is ultimately a cover sung in the style of the original.

Clapton, simply because it's one of the first records I bought. And he lives just down the road!

    I like 'em both.

Marley is on record for acknowledging that Clapton turned the song into a hit by giving it a different arrangement.

Thanks H, I am also a huge BM fan, I love his work. I never understood why EC did a version, then I saw his live version, and it is a cracker, BUT he aint Marley.

BTW Im loving these threads, keep it up. Cheers.

The version of him playing at the BBC theatre Shepherds Bush, is my favourite version by E.C. Not sure he plays it with the 'crybaby' solo anymore, it really is an awesome bit of playing, the rest of the band are not too bad either. Going to decline the choice, beetween Bob and Eric, love them both. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jooqtlN1Wz8&t=14s

461 Ocean Boulevard was a hugely successful album at the time, especially benefiting from the latest production conditions at the time and the Clapton version introduced a lot of people to the Wailers.
However there is a lot to be said for the earthy Wailers version and it is the Wailers for me.

Are the rules supposed to be comparing two cover versions, or an original v a cover?
The Dylan/Hendrix follows this rule, but the Family/Sinead one didn't.
    Or does it matter?

    Rules, what rules?

Can be an original v a cover or two covers, doesn't matter but the Family version was the original as it happens. I didn't do Dylan v Hendrix

EC was a bit spannered when he recored this, he's clean now. and has been for 20 years I guess.

Heres a version from 2015 at RAH.
A friend of mine, Michelle John, is on a BV's, but its still Marley for me.

And when you think E.C. was in between various addictions at this time, I am surprised he could stand up, let alone play this at such apparent ease, and of course musical excellence .

I prefer Bob's version, but in the way I'd prefer being kicked in the shin rather than in the "lower stomach".
