Cracking little player. If Powell had him in our record promotion season we would have been promoted by Christmas.3
-
He gets a lot of love here, so I feel like I stand alone on this cos my take was that he did very little for us and then abandoned the club as soon as Sunderland came calling. Serious question - what am I missing?9

Great player and a decent man also. Went to the ground and training ground and personally thanked everyone before he left.2

Such a shame hate it when a player has to retire due to injury...
Was holding my breath that we'd made a offer to him1 -
I understood we sold him because we couldnt turn down their offer (Almost like a Rob Lee selling?)JiMMy 85 said:He gets a lot of love here, so I feel like I stand alone on this cos my take was that he did very little for us and then abandoned the club as soon as Sunderland came calling. If we'd maybe been able to have kept him we'd have gone straight back up to the Premier League.ShootersHillGuru said:Cracking little player. If Powell had him in our record promotion season we would have been promoted by Christmas.
We were sixth when he was sold and instantly replaced by Andy Gray and completely lost our creativity.

Correct - He didn't have much choice.ForeverAddickted said:

It was a big offer, we needed the money .Went to join Keane and the other Irish contingent at Sunderland.
Seem to recall he was on circa 40k a week at Sunderland as well. Given his fitness record, you can't blame him for taking the money.6 -
Correct, it was a calculated gamble from Murray since Reid had been injured and we were in decent form at the time without him being in the team. £4 million was, if I recall, our operating losses that season and I think Murray simply saw a way of bringing money in to offset that - remember we were a PLC at that time and ultimately his responsibility was to the shareholders. I seem to remember Pardew wasn't thrilled with reid's selling either.ForeverAddickted said:

First captain since kinsella that I thought actually gave a damn and loved how apeshit he went when toddy scored against palace. Didn't think we'd find a captain in a long time that would care but we've got Jacko who is up there with kins in my opinion.6 -
Sad news this! Very good player it's a shame he had lots of injuries3

That left peg was a wand, he could have got pickles out of a jar with it.2
-
Terrific player - and we haven't had a creative midfielder since he left. That's nearly ten bloody years of square passes!!!7
-
Good little player, but like the current crop everytime he would string a few games together he would be back out injured again.
Saying that I'm quite suprised the witch hasnt gone in for him.0 -
Technically Andy Gray replaced the injured Chris Iwelumo, whereas Andy Reid was replaced by Therry Racon who became a more regular fixture in the side after Reid left.ForeverAddickted said:

I used to think that when there was a new thread for an old player. Now I just hope that they've made a public statement against the regime.ForeverAddickted said:Such a shame hate it when a player has to retire due to injury...

Put yourself in his place and perhaps you'll have some understanding?JiMMy 85 said:He gets a lot of love here, so I feel like I stand alone on this cos my take was that he did very little for us and then abandoned the club as soon as Sunderland came calling. Serious question - what am I missing?
Football was his career, not his hobby.
As a professional, he'd already proved he was capable of playing in the Premier League and for his country.
As a professional, it was a no-brainer for him to get back to the Prem and his mates from the Ireland squad at Sunderland.
No one is going to turn down a huge payrise.
Plus Charlton wanted him sold.
If the club has no loyalty to the player, then no player is going to want to stay.
Great character to have around the club - his leaving proved a big loss to Charlton on and off the pitch.

Had a lot of talent and was so classy on the ball. Unfortunately you could see his lifestyle choices didn't necessarily align with making it to the very top. Loved watching him play though.0

He was sold!!! He didn't try to push through the move. Sunderland came in and he bid was accepted. Heard he was as class off the pitch as he was on it. I also heard he went and said goodbye to every member of staff at Charlton. Did he used to own a pub in Greenwich?2

No, he was a regular at Hardy's Free House on Trafalgar Road towards the end of his time with us. Used to come in on Sunday nights. Years later, someone told me he was thinking of buying it. He owned a bar in Nottingham at the time he was sold.C_Jensens_Love_Child said:He was sold!!! He didn't try to push through the move. Sunderland came in and he bid was accepted. Lovely fella, top player. Good luck to him.

His technique was incredible. Really gifted footballer, just let down by his physique.
One of my favourite all time Charlton players.

Good player, but a reet fat bastard.......so I guess he had no right to be a footballer.......!0
-
Sorry to hear this news. Hope he enjoys retirement, whatever he does.1

Absolutely spot on.ValleyGary said:His technique was incredible. Really gifted footballer, just let down by his physique.

I loved him

One of my favourite players at Charlton - always hoped he may come back at some stage.2

The year we got relegated, skipper Luke Yiung tried to organise a team night out to boost morale and see how we could turn things around and Andy Reid was only player to turn up.2
-
Class player..a privilege to watch him play at the Valley.1
-
Very skillfull player. Pure class0

Seem to remember his natural build was the problem rather than anything to do with lifestyle. I think I remember reading at Spurs he actually had the lowest body fat levels of anyone else in the squad at the time.2
