Does not surprise me in the least. I remember working with a plastic Chelsea fan (loaded city financial analyst) back in the mid 90's when they beat us in the cup 3-0 at the Bridge. This twat came into work on Monday morning and kept on calling us "Carlton" he had clearly never heard of us in his life!!!! Annoying but also very funny when you think about it.

Take a look at Stamford Bridge on matchdays, loads more black and asian faces in the crowd, not a bad thing obviously but not their core support, and would not have been seen 20-30 years ago.

I bet most of them wouldn't have a clue if you asked them where they now park that little blue car that used to be behind the goal

Or the benches...my hand still throbs from the late 80's lol

Used to get the same in the Cutty in Thamesmead, random guys walking in one week with an Arsenal shirt one Sunday for the live game and I swear they walked in 2-3 weeks later with a manure shirt on, fickle glory hunters who i have no time for.
Had a lad who used to work here, claimed he was a manure fan, then had the cheek to ask me last year "What time does the FA cup final kick off tomorrow"

Live in a Chelsea stronghold and quite enjoy my drunken debates with the blue natives.Giving them a helping hand to relegation and beating them 5 times on the spin are always my starters for 10,met usually with non-plussed responses.

I met Cive Walker on holiday. Nice bloke. No mention of the flasher thing, though.

I like the way all Chelsea fans have to open any conversation on football with a stetement about the unlikely number of years (always more than 10) that they've been a die hard fan.

To be fair, on the Pates thing (when Pates, went up, to lift the members cup...) I wonder how many of our fans would recognize - say - Balmer and that is a lot more recent...
  • Coming out of Stamford Bridge last game of the season after sending them into the play offs, and being escorted into Fulham Broadway, kicking off everywhere

The difference being that those Charlton fans are not glory hunters.

The same principle applies though. In the past 10 years we've gained a lot of new fans who whilst not exactly hunting glory, wouldn't have been going to Charlton if we'd gone the Millwall route and spent years in league 1 rather than the premier league.
