Laptop help.

Has anyone had this problem before;

Been using my laptop for about a year no problems, all of sudden the password to enter isn't recognised and I'm locked out!

Any advice please.

  • Caps lock on?
  • Pour some full fat coke over the keyboard and give it a shake, never fails.
  • Caps lock on?

This (or Num lock is off, if it has one and you use numbers as well as alpha in your password).

Could be a fault with the keyboard. Could try plugging in an external keyboard if you have one knocking about?

Do you use your windows log on or one specific to the machine? If the former you can reset the password from another device.
  • Are you getting any error message?
  • Glad I asked..

    Pre-boot password or Windows password?
(I presume it's not an Apple because a Mac user would have called the thread "Macbook help")

Windows password, it just suddenly doesn't accept my password.
  • Can you start the machine in safe mode?
press F8 (lots) before Windows loads and there should be an extra account called "Administrator" which normally doesn't have a password.
You should be able to reset the password on your normal account by toing to "User Accounts" fomr control panel.

In all seriousness, can you access the email address linked to the log in? The laptop/account may be compromised and someone might have changed your password.

If a log in has taken place from an unknown machine you should have an email trlling you about it and also if the password has been changed you'll have email confirmation.

    Worth checking.

  • Yep, me too.

Running Windows 10. Refuses to accept my pin number, then invites me to choose a new pin.

Won't accept that either, tells me "something is wrong" and I can skip.

Then after a long-ish delay "preparing windows", it lets me in anyway - but no passwords, nor able to access my documents, photos and other files.

Other than that, I can use it fine.
But I have to go through the same processes again next time I log on.

  • Can I bump this, please?

    No sure that will help.
  • possible that you previously logged on using a local account,
Then, last time you were on Windows said something like "do you want to sync your files?"
    and you said yes.
If you have a microsoft account, try the password form that account.

    for both Oggy and Dan
  • Happened to me with Windows 10. Not sure how or why, but the password set itself to my Windows Live password rather than the password I set up when I first setup the laptop.

Thanks, Spicy - I'll try that dreckly.

  • okay, either this worked and these guys are ingrates or it didn't and I've broken two computers.
  • Could anyone be so kind as to advise me on whether this is a decent buy or not please. To be used for spreadsheets and accounts etc. and play at least 5 seconds of porn without buffering.
    Cheers -

  • ..I've got the older 4gb version that seems okay...
  • That seems pretty expensive, apart from it'd be fine, for your needs!
  • Cheers @Stu_of_Kunming . The Argos website crashed last night anyway, so gonna keeps looking today and see what else is about

..I've got the older 4gb version that seems okay...

Just buy some new RAM and make it 8GB.
Seriously, if you basically want it for general office stuff and it's not failing - just upgrade it a little and keep your old one going by adding/replacing RAM, which you can do yourself easily.

If you want to buy new, the one you're looking at is fine for office work and usual internet use. But I'd read some in depth reviews first.

A quick look at the specs:

    It's got a decent recent i5 processor.
Hard drive has plenty of storage, but it's of the old conventional type so a bit slow today compared with Solid State Drives (SSD).
8GB RAM is fine for what you say you need.

The screen resolution 1366 x 768 pixels is fine for general office work - but is rapidly being superceded by 1920 x 1080 pixels, much better definition and you'll certainly appreciate how much sharper is the image when you're watching any dodgy films that Dave Mehmet's lent you.

The shared graphics card will be fine for general viewing - but will struggle if you want to play games.
If you want to play games or do any serious photo work, you'll need a dedicated graphics card but otherwise no need.

As always, best to do your research, read reviews and not buy anything in a hurry.
They'll be plenty of good prices to be had this time of year if you know what you're buying.

  • Did @iamdan and @Oggy Red manage to get their passwords/pins working again?

    Yes, I did thanks, Chizz..

It's a while ago now, but Spiced Addicks advice must have worked, because no problem since.

Sorry, Spicy. Must have missed this - belated thanks, anyway!
