I stopped reading the URL when I saw it was from The Sun.
Given how much money is to be made in the Premier League, why on earth would you want to break away? Even if (and it's a big if) there is as much/more to be made in the new super league, you wouldn't be eligible for the champions league and thus would have one league as an income source. Not to mention you'd be strengthening your rivals. Total nonsense. Slow news day.2 -
I think there are talks with UEFA due soon over the financial split of the new Champions League TV package for the 2018/19 season onwards - every time that happens the big clubs start the nonsense about a European super league.5

Can eventually see it happening as a midweek league taking over from the Champions League, adjacent to domestic competition, league cup only for non participating clubs and the F A Cup down to no replays. The clubs that choose to participate with their 70 players squads complaining about fixture congestion and pushing through a reduced Premier League to 18 clubs and only two relegation places. Winter break introduced to allow top clubs to rest their players in friendly tournaments in the Far East and Dubai3

LOL! I'm sure the fact that Moan Utd, for the second time in 3 years, and Chelsea face not qualifying for the Champions League next year has nothing at all to do with this decision!
Quite obviously, these 5 clubs don't fancy being frozen out of their money-grabbing League by upstarts like Leicester and Tottenham. How much better to have a competition where they automatically qualify and one that doesn't admit upstarts.

This has been inevitable ever since the introduction of the Champions League. In a cup half full kind of way, this could benefit English football, with more teams having a chance of winning something.
Depending on which outfits make the final 'Euro Cut', we could have Leicester, Spurs, West Ham, Everton, Charlton, Accrington Stanley and Uncle Tom 'n all vying for honours, and more and more British players being given a chance as the 'cream' of the world's 'stars' will be even more evenly spread across Europe.
In a glass half empty way though, many 'glamour' fixtures would be lost.
Personally I think that the sooner the Euro bubble bursts the better. When it happens, then professional football at the higher level will retract from the Hollywood style lalaland it has inhabited for the past few years4 -

Assuming plans did go ahead for this and there was a european super league set up with say 16/18/20 teams, how exactly is it decided who gets to go in?
Is it decided on current income? Fan base? Past history?
Too many factors that are questionable for this to go ahead any time soon. For example if they're going off past history and including Liverpool then they'd probably have to invite the likes of AC and Inter. But then the likes of Spurs, Napoli, Roma etc could all argue they're currently better sides and it will all kick off.1 -

Manchester City will be involved despite being relatively new to the trough. Why ? Because they have fat wads of cash. History, Fan base etc will mean zip compared to the bank statement.

Could be a tactical ploy by the big clubs to pressure UEFA for guaranteed wild cards into the CL and/or a change to qualifying rules to exclude smaller countries and give more places to the big countries.
(England is at serious risk of losing one of its CL places.)3 -
This is only an issue in England because of the potential volatility at the top. In all the other top European leagues (bar Italy possibly) you know who will qualify every year. Barca, Real, PSG, Bayern it's not really an issue to have guaranteed places as they wil always qualify.1
