  • Sarr is an ok player with the ball in front of him, it's mainly when the ball goes over his head and he has to turn he struggles badly.

He's always seems to be in the right place at the right time though. He intercepts a lot of balls!
  • I'll try and be fair. Pros:

    - He's tall
    - That means he wins a few headers
    - Has scored twice for us
    - Young and therefore "has potential"
    - Makes bold decisions in terms of build-up play

Okay, I'm sort of scraping the barrel there. Cons:

    - Ball-watches far, FAR too much which means he a) has really slow reactions; b) is unaware of the positioning of both colleagues and opposition players; and c) often lets the opposition get to the first or second ball thereby putting himself under more pressure and forcing himself to do more work
    - He's pretty slow
    - His physical co-ordination appears to be similar to Bambi's (actually, that's a bit harsh, but I've seen him unsure of his footing on numerous occasions)
    - Despite being able to win a few headers - they're not always directed, well, anywhere meaningful
    - Not as strong as his size intimates: either that, or he simply isn't good in a tussle and gets rolled by cannier strikers far too easily
    - Young and therefore "has potential" to be utterly terrible
    - Not technically good enough for his bold decisions to actually come off: passes can be misplaced, headers won can go completely the wrong way, has been caught in possession more than once etc

Like, the thing is so much of what's in my "cons" list can be rectified (ball-watching is the one that absolutely MUST be), and if they were addressed, then he'd be hard work for any opposition striker to play against.

He's young, exposed (sort of) and at the moment - not good enough, if I'm perfectly honest.
  • Scary, in a bad way.
  • His distribution at times is very good but defensively he's shite. Let's the ball bounce and gets in all sorts of trouble. Only young tho and another one forced into a tough league too early.
  • Not ready yet but potentially a good player. His ability to deliver that potential depends on him and his coaches. Would like to see him play regularly for the U21s for the moment.

Better than Lennon in the past couple of games, but hey he's not an academy product and he was signed in the RD era so everything he does is shit and he's a liability, nicking a living and all the rest of it

    Yawn

Thing is, Lennon wasn't signed for £1.4m was he? Lennon wasn't signed to replace the likes of Morrison, Dervite, Ben Haim, Johnson and Gomez. Lennon has been thrown in a bit too early and he's struggling but Sarr was brought in for decent money earned by selling decent players specifically to plug a gap in our defence and he's failed at his role. Here we are, second from bottom in the league, leaking goals, but yeah, you're right, we're not criticising different players similarly enough for your liking. It's all a conspiracy. Yawn.
Thought when we signed Sarr, was one for the future. But I may be wrong. Also Sarr didn't set the price for his transfer.
No-one said he did set the price for his transfer. Doesn't change the fact that the expectation on an expensive player is greater than it is on an Academy player, which is the point I was answering. Sarr was hardly one for the future when the season started with us having two centre halves, including Sarr, and a holding midfielder covering at the back. Maybe Sarr's a victim of our terrible squad building but it doesn't stop him from being a liability at the moment
    Victim of our crass management...
  • His passing is mixed as well, sometimes he doesn't know whether to pass it out or hoof it into Row Z, so all he does is pass it 15 yards to an opposition player.

  • Nearly gifted them two goals in the second half yesterday. Liability and too slow.

Young lad and hope he does improve, just not this season when we can't risk ay more stupid goals!

Roger Johnson will help Sarr out.....by taking his place.

Seriously, Johnson has the sort of experience that could definitely benefit Sarr. A few matches along side him will hopefully improve his game and give him a bit of a confidence boost.
  • None of you remember Johnson's little moment against Blackburn last season, then? If Sarr's a liability, so is he

All defenders make mistakes, but the run of results since he came into the team suggest that he was a benefit to the team
  • No way was Sarr properly scouted. I can see why Carol liked the look of him he does a few good things, but if he'd watched him enough he would have seen him as a risky investment.
  • Sarr will benefit hugely from having both Williams and Johnson at the club. He has the ability to go on and become very good. He's had a very traumatic entry into British football and is still very young, overseas and playing the wrong side (for him) of an inexperienced pair.

If we can keep him at the club despite his baptism of fire then I think we will have a very decent player in a couple of seasons.
  • Sarr like others (Kish, Costa, Diawara) who struggled in English football initially. I am sure he will adapt. Being coached by a man from Belgian 3rd tier, and an ex-striker whose 2nd touch was a tackle doesn't help. Doubt we have a defence coach. Chris Smalling is 25 and until last season was prone to similar howlers but now looks solid.

So that is one for the exit door.

Right but end/beginning for whatever reason he didn't play like a UEFA cup/Champions League winner with us did he? I don't even know why this is being debated, it's an observation. Naby Sarr is not hopeless, he is an ok player who will become a good player if he can lose the propensity for a mistake, stop getting the wrong side of strikers and stop letting the ball bounce in the box. This reminded me of Jorge Costa's tendency to get into awkward positions, have communication problems with Kiely and once again, make a mountain out of a molehill. There are probably dissimilarities between the two players as well, but Sarr's most striking features are the above ones.

    Lol are you on drugs?
  • Sarr was awful today. Really not up to it. Potential, yes. Good enough now, No! Needs to go out on loan and learn his trade, make the mistakes elsewhere and come back a better player.

How could he have been. He's barely played any first team football in his career.

    Same with Ba.

    And Ceballos.

    And McAleny.

    And Makienok last season.

Bergdich has but it's hard to believe he was watched a great deal, it wasn't long before we were questioning if he was good enough.

Sarr was brought in for the future .. Fact he cost 1.4 will tell you how highly rated he is
Why's he in the first team then?

  • In a properly run club Sarr would be one for the future. Thought his heading was OK yesterday and several passes and tackles were good - including one sublime through ball to Solly in the second half.

But he is too light weight and needs to bulk up a bit because at least three times he was shouldered off the ball by sturdy Forest forwards. Both he and Harry will benefit from Johnson's experience and know how in this division. Both might improve their positioning which is not up to standard for a start.

The comparison with the great Jorge is bonkers. If you want a comparison - club captain, out of sorts with his club, tough and experienced, wants to resurrect his career, may stay for a few months - look at our recent arrival and hope he has a similar impact that 'the tank' had while with us.
  • Costa did not struggle when he came in. He dominated a Prem forward line with virtually no training and not knowing his own teams players.
