Charlton, 'Palace Ultras' and getting behind the team
There are fans who cheer only when we're winning, others no matter what and there is another type of fan who don't sing when we are playing well but are happy to shout abuse when we are not.
This is nothing new but if we could create an atmosphere that is positive, even a naive optimism, the players with the least confidence could go from being 5/10 to a 6/10 or a 6/10 to a 7/10 etc. Yes, and even the 2/10s could improve!

Much easier to back the team when you believe in the club, many will say it's harder to back the product on the pitch when they have no belief or connection to Duchatelet & Miere.16
-
I agree, but that is where a kind of naivety is a good thing. Cheering as if we're champions when we know we're far from it.NorthStandUltra said:Much easier to back the team when you believe in the club, many will say it's harder to back the product on the pitch when they have no belief or connection to Duchatelet & Miere.

The average age of Charlton fans precludes naivety from entering into it, most are too long in tooth and understandably a lot of apathy has set in. Get it organised by all means it's worth a try, out of small acorns and all that.0
-
Despite the ongoing shambles of CAFC, very few seem able to rouse themselves to protest. I agree with all the sentiments expressed, but it does'nt seem to be part of the Charlton DNA.0
-
Apathy is the biggest threat to the club, people just can't be arsed to go/protest or whatever - pains me to say it, The Valley Party wouldn't happen now.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop at anyone, I have stopped going, I have a ST & haven't been since September other than Ipswich the other week. I don't like what's happening & can't support it, worryingly, I'm not missing it either.5 -
I would rather hit my bollocks with a hammer than be like a palace ultra.12

I still look back at those Red Division chaps away to Watford with a degree of respect. They gave it everything for 90 mins and had a right laugh doing it. And we won 4-3.4

Happened organically all the time under CP, 0-2 down to Cardiff being the best example...2

Went to palace v Arsenal earlier this season & those ultras weren't so noisy when losing.!0

Anyone in Britain who dubs themselves an "ultra", be they Palace or even Clapton, is going to come across as a bit of a twat, frankly.
The Palace lot are especially absurd, but at least they have something to believe with the team doing well and an owner that's been doing a good job. If Steve Parish's new American chums start messing about with things, or Pardew's ego gets the better of him and the team takes a nosedive, then let's see what happens.
There just isn't a lot to be enthusiastic about at Charlton, and there's precious little unity in the fanbase, beyond the protest-initiating core on this very website. Anyone that did try to make a noise would soon get the SIDDDAAAAAHHN! treatment.
Of course, if we went on a long winning streak, things could be different...6 -
and if you do, I'LL hit your bollocks with a hammer....Baldybonce said:I would rather hit my bollocks with a hammer than be like a palace ultra.

Ultras are what you get when Europeans try and copy British terrace culture and get it wrong, not massively wrong but still wrong. It's like listening to Austrian rock music, drinking Maltese whisky or putting a slice of Croatian cheddar in your ploughmans.
I was in Spain on holiday and a mate ordered the full English breakfast in a bar. What he got was a boiled egg, a deep fried hotdog, a 'rasher' of salami and a slice of biscuit hard bread. The ingredients were sort of there but it was all wrong. Same with Ultras - the ingredients are there, singing / chanting, gesticulating / posturing and so on - it's just not right in some way.

I thought we didn't want to be like the palace ultras? Would you like the pa guy to read out the goal scorer and we could shout the surname?Godstone said:

I did too but they wouldn't get past the PC Brigade these days. Their performance of Hawaii Five-0 whilst seated canoe style with rowing motions, on the terrace at Ninian Park (opening game of 84-85) still makes me smile.Hastingsaddick said:

Where are these Ultra's going to meet before the game so the police can escort them to the ground. (They will need to have whip round to pay for the police).1

When the referee lectured Fraeye last Tuesday, and many of our crowd chanted 'off off' I thought they were pitching their support just right.
Organic, instant, and not manufactured by any 'let's get behind the boys' instructions, and it concealed a mixture of pain and humour, confusion and knowing where the responsibility sits.
If players, management staff, or CEO's don't like our attitude take it up with Roland. I have paid my money and will react the way I see fit moment to moment.5 -
Why the Feck would you go to Palarse V Goonershit ?? Rather sticks pins in my bollox0
-
I have always sung my head off, even when we have had poor season or playing in front of piss-poor crowds during the nomadic era. But struggling to get any enthusiasm for this side, probably as much because of what's happening off the pitch, and it's also hard to be remorselessly upbeat when the football has been so poor0

I don't want 'ultras' just for fans to get behind the team even when they're playing terrible.drewman said:

Try and copy British terrace culture lol? Ultras have been around since the 50's and are completely different. Plus anyway look at the non-existent fan culture in England now, stadiums full of tourists and picnic fans while Europe couldn't be more different apart from a few places due to repression etcmilo said:Ultras are what you get when Europeans try and copy British terrace culture and get it wrong, not massively wrong but still wrong.
