Mick Jagger, Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry. But the best is the inimitable Frank Tovey.
  • Peter Noone (Hermans Hermits)
  • Mark E Smith

    Plant, Jagger, Mercury, Marriot, Johnson

That's my opinion of the best - not sure how 'influential' front men can be. But I suppose a decent example of that would be Plant being heavily influenced by Marriot.
  • Influential, in the way that they inspired others/a loyal following:

    Bob Marley
Robert Smith (sorry, personal favourite so has to be in every top 5/10 etc)
    Lennon/McCartney
    Debbie Harry
    Kurt Cobain

    The best....hmmm...different IMHO

    Robert Smith (see above)
    Freddie Mercury
    Thom Yorke
    Mick Jagger
But then could have Damon Albarn, Ian Brown, Shaun Ryder etc etc as all very good at what they do....
  • Not forgetting Eric Burdon.

    Little Richard
    Marley
    Jagger
    Mercury
    Rotten
  • Mark Bolan
    Bowie
    Brian Ferry

That early 70s period of glam then "art" rock influenced an awful lot of bands and front men from the New Romantics through Suede and the likes of Franz Ferdinand

And of course James Brown, copied by so many including Jagger!

I was also going to say Robert Smith! I'm a fan of The Cure. Bloodflowers was the first Cure album that I listened to and I remember I was instantly hooked and became almost obsessed with their music during my years at the university.
  • Derr

    Springsteen
  • For me as follows

    Mick Jagger
    Freddie Mercury
    Robert Plant
    Paul Rogers
    Steve Marriot

    with honourable mention to:

Noddy Holder who was phenomenal live
    Phil Lynott great frontman
Axel Rose when the prick decided he was ready to perform

    Without question.
  • Mark Oliver Everett, the frontman of Eels.

I'm guessing here but there can't have been many other (any?) American rock singers who have been granted Freedom of The City of London. (A great gig at the Barbican afterwards too.)
  • Elvis
    Little Richard
    Chuck Berry
    Bob Marley
    Lou Reed
  • Tough subject so will stick to the first five that come to mind:

    David Bowie
    John Lydon
    Ian Brown
    Roger Daltrey
    Lou Reed
  • Band wise I would say Jim Morrison,Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger
But on the own and full stop Elvis Presley

Yes he's really one of the most influential frontmen, ever......said only you.
Whenever we have a thread like this, you always get someone who picks an obscure person that the majority have never heard of, why?
  • Patti Smith
    Joni Mitchell
    Janis Joplin
    Chrissie Hynde
    Diana Ross

See what you done there, all treacles

    ; )
  • Andy Hunt
  • Roger Daltrey
  • Chris Barber no contest.
  • Hard to argue with Freddie Mercury. Pretty much the ultimate frontman as far as rock bands go.

Also a fan of Liam Gallagher, Jarvis Cocker, Axl Rose, James Hetfield, Jon Bon Jovi.
  • The Lizard King. He can do anything.

    Or Brian Wilson.
  • chuck berry

    lennon

    bolan

    marley

    freddie (not of the dreamers)

How do you go from Fats Waller to Limahl via Jim Morrison.

    Chronologically.
Limahl, unfortunately, spawned a million talentless boy - band wannabees.
