FA chairman Greg Dyke 'wants to reduce the Premier League to 18 teams'

Just saw this on Mirror's website: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/fa-chairman-greg-dyke-wants-6915869
Sounds ridiculous really.

The Football Association is reportedly set for talks with the Premier League over reducing the number of teams involved in England's top flight. FA chairman Greg Dyke - who is responsible for finding ways to improve the national team - is behind the plot. The Times report that Dyke plans to speak to Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore about cutting the division down by two teams. That would, however, have a knock-on effect on the tiers below. So, representatives from the Championship, League One and League Two would also need to be consulted. The size of England's top flight last changed in 1995 an extra team was relegated from the Premier League and one fewer was promoted to reduce the number from 22 to 20. Any move to carry out this plan is likely to be met by huge opposition from clubs in the country's top two tiers, while the effect it would have on the hopes of the national team are debatable. The idea is that with fewer games to play England's stars will be less tired by the time competitions come around. But current broadcasting contracts run until 2019 so any deal would be unlikely before then.

  • Maybe IF they sweetened the pot a bit? Prem 2 maybe? Just hope we are not outside the sweetie shop with our snotty noses pressed up against the widow when/if that happens!
  • It will never happen. The Premier league clubs would never vote for it for a few reasons.

    1. Premier league chairman don't care about the national team.
    2. It will leave teams more vulnerable to relegation when they reduce it.
    3. Loss of revenue.

Prem 2 requires a fair distribution of TV money down through the two leagues, as happens in Germany. That entails really strong people making the case for the abolition of the FAPL as a separate entity. Greg Dyke is not such a person. He helped to create the bloody thing.
  • If clubs stopped playing pre and post season friendlies then maybe the players could have a decent break and be less tired.

Or maybe the plan is to have less real games so that can fit in a Middle/Far East, North American tour during the season?
  • Bit like the winter break, all the big clubs would arrange big money friendlies instead of resting players.
  • This bloke wants to reduce the size of the prem and to trash our unique football league pyramid by putting in B teams.

Sounds like a real footballing man

  • Read only a few weeks ago that he wasnt going to get voted in for another term as head of FA... Hope thats the case
  • How long before he comes out with the idea to reduce it even further, so the big clubs can played each other four times a season ?
  • And this affects us how?

  • Greg Dyke is not even fit to be Greg Dyke
  • Yes because having a 20 team league really caused Spain a lot of problems. Perhaps he should try and sort out grass roots coaching with a focus on improving kids skills and technique instead of trying to produce 6ft+ powerhouses
  • Dyke is an absolute plank
  • This is just a stepping stone on the way to reducing the league to 4 teams in 2025.
  • Turkeys voting Christmas so won't happen. Would make eff all difference to the national team anyway unless it's coupled with genuine reforms to coaching and youth development, but that won't happen either, again because the Premier League is too powerful.
  • Dyke has not seen his name in the press recently so he has come up with another gem

    Because we love football.

Be nice when we get to see some
  • You gotta laugh at the idea that we don't win world cups because our players are too tired.

Our what? What is unique about it?

And in particular, why is it more effective than Germany's pyramid?

  • If it goes to 18-teams there'll only be about 12 players who qualify for England still left playing in it....old Droopy chops will have to pick the rest from the 26-team "EFL Championship", sounds like a sure fire way to win a World Cup
  • Spain has a league of 20 teams. It doesn't affect them as they teach control and skills from a young age, and we don't, so their level of football is ahead of ours. Greg Dyke should retire.
However, it will be more interesting for our fanbase if he decides to regionalise tier 3 and 4, as the current set up seem hell bent on taking us there.

There are some decent arguments for doing that, at least at tier 4, and they've been proposed since the time Greg Dyke was mainly known for Roland Rat, to be fair.
  • Greg Dyke? He'd be out of his depth on a wet pavement.

I have lived in Spain for years and involved with football here and could not agree more with this... nail on head.
