Pepe Mel New WBA Manager

He doesn't speak a word of English.

WBA turned him down a few weeks ago because he wanted to bring his own staff in. Never managed anywhere but Spain. Recently sacked by Betis.
The WBA chairman believes in the Sporting Director system, this where you consistently keep all your back room staff employed by the SD and the only position that changes is the 1st Team Coach. Will be interesting to see if Mel is allowed to bring any staff in.

Assisted by Keith Downing and our very own Dean Kiely.

WBA showing a lot of confidence in him too - with an 18 month contract. Pardew wouldn't pay for the bus fare to the interview for that!
  • It's as if everyone us doing a Southampton, bringing in foreign coaches with no experience of the British game. Watford have done the same

Took Real Betis from the second division in the Spanish leagues, to 7th in the first in only 3 years.

Is that such an achievement? La Liga is even less competitive than our top division.

  • Going down.

Pepe Mel sounds like a parody character of an Englishman pretending to be Spanish

'White Lines' was a great song

  • He worked miracles at Betis on a shoestring budget and Barcelona aside they played the best quality of passing football in Spain last season. Interesting to see how he settles in England but easy to jump on the "who is this Johnny foreigner bandwagon"

Not surprised... With the compensation sorted between Cardiff and Mackay I reckon there will be a bit of clamoring for him this summer

Might even see Sam Allerdyce depart on that reason soon

Should have kept Steve Clarke. Far too many trigger happy chairman knocking around these days, ours included.

It seems the communication was a problem and they didn't like the director of technical performance coming in to help Mel..

    Quote from Gareth McAuley:

"It was difficult for some players to take, being told by a computer analyst how to play football"

There was some dispute over coaches too I remember which actually meant Mel was rejected at first.

Remember him being at Everton before being sacked by PNE and Sheffield Wednesday.
