POTY Question

  • I have been the culprit who puts together the voting criteria for Player of the Year over the last 4 years and set out the voting forms. I had no idea there was any set minimum number of games previous to my involvement and decided that eveyone who has played 10 or more games should be on the ballot. This produced two wins for Solley and one for Semedo all by pretty large margins and everybody seemed pretty happy with it.

This season is less straightforward but Yann, Dale Stevens and Ben Alnwick are all on the ballot and have each received votes already. It is up to each individual to decide if their contribution has been so immense that despite playing for only a portion of the year, they warrant your vote. The same comments apply to Reza, Astrit and Diego. The latter will reach 23 appearances for the season if he appears in the remaining games so his contribution has not been that insignificant and if my memory serves me right Andy Petterson won the award in 1997 only figuring in the first team for the second half of the season.

Still, collecting in the votes does underline how we all see things differently and it would be a boring old world if we all agreed. I can reveal that every player but one on the voting form has received at least one vote and the one person who still has 'nilpoints' is far from being the most obvious candidate.

By the way Jose Semedo was so pleased to be POTY that he took the cup back to Portugal to show his family and then left it there. It took months and months to get it back !!

Anyway we will be out collecting as many votes as possible before the Blackburn game so make sure that you give us yours so that the eventual winner will be the most deserving in an otherwise pretty forgettable season

Can't believe I can't vote for Marcus Tudgay. Seems a bit off.

Think it will be ridiculous if Kermy wins. It's player of the season, he left half way through. Likewise Poyet who although being outstanding has played half a season or less. Take away those two and you are left with Lawrie Wilson. If he doesn't win it will be a travesty.

I agree with nthis, I think over and above appearances, Wilson has been great this season and has my vote.

As for a protest vote for Kermogant to "Show RD!" just remmeber this is not a club competition, it is the fans showing their appreciation of the players, if you want to vote for Kermogant because you think he is the player of the season great, otherwise don't be childish and try to ruin it for the fans.

I fail to see how it's disgusting to vote for a player who has represented the club this season and some people's in opinion, preformed better than anyone else who has.

Because he's not a Charlton player , not hard to understand is it !
Scott Carson was never a Charlton player, but he won it.

10 apps does sound ridiculously low for a Player of the Season.

For the Statbank, for the last four years we've used 25 apps as our cut off, which may possibly be a tad high and perhaps we'll review in the summer (with hindsight of seeing the impact of Poyet).

However, 10 does feel low and by doing so, you open up the possiblities of other agenda voting (which may or may not be wanted, I don't know)

Poyet is a special player though.
  • I take your point but I think that people will make their own judgements and the majority will not want to vote for someone who has contributed so little. Two people tried to vote for Solley on Friday and were quite put out when I told them that they could not.

Really don't see the comparison to be fair and if you don't get why it's ridiculous for people to vote for yann or Stephens then I really can't be botherd to explain .

How many games do you need to play to win a league winners medal?

The couple of years when I organised POTY, there wasn't a required number of appearances, think they still had to be at the club when voting took place. As for the cup it was lost for a number of years and when it was found it had some damage if it. It was repaired and the names of the missing years (6 I think) were added.

You get a winners medal if you play more than ten games and your club wins the league so not entirely ridiculous.

Nailed on that Poyet will win the POTY award. Disgrace if he doesn't although I could live with Jacko taking the title. I actually voted for Poyet but could have gone for Jacko for his efforts, stamina, leadership, skill, assists etc. I have been impressed that he has played so many back to back games in full.
  • Both my Dad and I voted for Kermorgant. It was not a childish vote, exactly. It was difficult to think of a stand out candidate and, yes, I do think that he has contributed more than the rest of the squad, even though he hasn't played since January.

I, genuinely, hope he wins it, even more so if we go down!

Really is no stand out winner, Wilson is a decent shout but 'player of the season' should be someone who's really caught the eye and showed genioune skill as well as commitment, not sure Wilson fits that..

Giving a vote to Yann shows how shortsighted people are, he left, he didn't have to but he chased the money, and he are in a better position in the league since he left.

Vote for someone because they are truly worthy of it, not for someone to prove a point to a board who are doing their best to ensure the club grows financially and successfully.

Wilson, Cousins or Dervite for me, the latter simply because he has been a rock in the past 15 games, just as influential as Poyet in the same amount of time.

I'd give it to Morrison, Poyet or Cousins.
  • It's a one horse race, all bets are off. Diego Poyet will be the one asking his Mum where to find the Duraglit.
I really hope he's still here in 12 months time with a shout of winning it again.

To be fair the club didn't have to sell him. As we look like we are going to be safe now and as we received a fee for him (all be it that it looks like we have wasted it on Polish Pete at the moment) it could be argued that it was good business.

However, he wasn't out of contract, like Stephens, so the club could have turned down the offers and kept the players, who could have left on a free in the summer.

Besides, as I said, I'm not sure that anyone else contributed more this season!

Is it too late to vote for sordell?
  • Is it too late to vote for sordell?

    Not at all, Holdkneebomb.

There will be even MORE of us around the ground collecting votes prior to the game on Saturday!

And if, when the final whistle's gone you still haven't managed to vote and are a season ticket holder, hand in the slip in your booklet to either the VG office or Main Reception before you leave the area.

hand in the slip in your booklet to either the VG office or Main Reception before you leave the area.

Ideally this is how it should be done to avoid multiple voting. I know this would make it hard for match by match punters to vote but there could be ways round it?

TBH , Stone, I really don't think you should be worrying about " multiple voting "!

Why not wait & see how many votes are collected and gauge that number against our average home attendance ....

Has anyone explained why the number of required appearances was halved ?
  • Gotta be Jacko, his influence in the team can't be underestimated. Lost track of how many times he's picked us up or been the only player on the pitch who will give 110% for the whole game. Plus I figure this is basically his last chance, and for someone who is attached to the club and the fans like him I feel he deserves to win it before he leaves
