He came across well enough but the reporter hesitated and dropped the interview. Luckily there was another reporter on hand to take over.

None of the readers could work out why the editor had sent that particular reporter in the first place, and were glad when the other guy took over. Maybe it was the newspaper's owner that had actually ordered that reporter to do the interview, but nobody really knows, and most are hoping that a third reporter (who is away interviewing the Pope in York) will come back and always be on stand-by.
