First British male to win Wimbledon in 77 years. He was also losing finalist in the Australian Open. In other words finalist in 2 of the 4 tennis Grand Slams. Farah is the other main contender for me. Two World golds and two Olympic golds at 5,000 and 10,000 metres is some achievement and only one other man has done it.

Trouble is Justin Rose is there on the basis of just winning one thing this year...
Same with Chris Froome he won a few smaller events but he only won a single "major" event in cycling this year, true he he won the Tour of Oman / Critérium International / Tour de Romandie / Critérium du Dauphiné but these could equate to a Masters event in Tennis
Andy Murray though at the time of Wimbledon, had the US Open and has Olympic Gold (pretty much holding three of the last 5 majors prior to this years US Open in a field dominated by Federer / Nadal and Djokovic)0 -

"Forgive me if you've heard this before, but before the last World Cup finals I interviewed Murray and Tim Henman together for the first time. Murray was late joining the conversation and dropped into his chair midway through a chat about the impending football World Cup.

Just get over it. Even if it wasn't a joke and was deadly serious he still deserves to win SPOTY for what he has achieved.

If a male wins Wimbledon for the first time in nearly 80 years, and didnt win SPOTY, them something would be very wrong somewhere (either that or England have won the World Cup). It isnt going to be a cyclist again, otherwise it is in danger of being called Cyclist Personality of The Year. We didnt have a British F1 Champion. Olympics was last year, so atheltics isnt as much in the limelight. Ashes wins are not as exciting as they would have been 10 years ago. And the football team are still a bunch of losers / chavs / twats *delete as appropriate. It has to be / should therfore be Murray by default.

Can't believe there is not many people hoping fo AP McCoy to win. What that guy has achieved is unparalleled in both his sport and all sports worldwide, his achievement will not be bettered. Surely that demands some recognition.
Yes Murray won wimbledon and held another title at the time, but if a different brit burst on the scene and wins wimbledon next year, do they automatically win it or is it just murrays luck that british tennis players have been that poor for circa 80 years prior to his emergence.0 -

I don't like Andy Murray much, well I don't know him of course but I don't find his public persona particularly engaging. However before he won any of his Grand Slam titles I thought the best thing he ever did was his anti England comment. It WAS a joke but even if it wasn't good for him for being truthful. We are allowed to slag off Scotland but they are not to do the same? Ridiculous. Healthy rivalry and that is all it is. Any Scot sitting there saying he hopes England progress well in anything would just make themself look silly.
Even if he said that he hated Charlton, David Bowie, Michael Caine and SE9 he still deserves to win this award.

I suspect large amounts of the public will not know exactly what most of these people have won or even who Hannah Cockcroft is. Most people will however know what Murray and Froome won, and this gives them an advantage.

This used to be a nice little programme on a Wednesday night from BBC TV centre with just the elite of sport in the audience. Some good humorous interviews and demonstrations. A good review of the years sport from BBC's coverage.
Agreed it does seem to more about interviewing each contender and always making sure the votes are coming in.
