    my old man was, he was 18 then, stupidly he and his mates left early.... still wind him up about it. they got back to the boozer in Deptford slagging the team off and just how poor we were, few others who stayed came in and told them what happened, they wouldn't belive it thought they were being wound up wasn't till he saw the paper the next day the penny dropped. since then every game we have been to together we always stay till the end and I think ive only ever left one game early in my life the barnet cup game few seasons ago. he regrets it to this day but stil is a ledge.

    I was there too aged 11. Stayed to the end and was one of those on the pitch shouting "we want Summers". I will never forget it and I've never seen another game like it since. The play-off final against Sunderland was close though!

    So was l aged 12 standing on the small terrace between the main stand & the south terrace so I had a good view of the comeback goals . My grandfather who was on the east terrace left when we were 5-1 down . This was also the first time I stood on the valley pitch an act which I repeated in the infamous final ( but thankfully wasn't ) last game at the valley v Stoke.

    I was standing on the small terrace between the main stand and the covered end (North). We were a group of five mates one of whom was a staunch Liverpool fan. He was p#####g himself laughing at us all when we went 5-1 down and was totally speechless at the final whistle. I still think of this game very often. Johnny Summers became my most favorite Charlton player after this match and I bought a brick to dedicate his achievement and to remember this famous match which has been placed at the foot of Sam Bartram's statue.

    Went to the previous home game but got bored, so told my dad he could stuff his precious club. Hated football even more when two weeks later my dad came home smiling like a demented Cheshire cat. Seven years later I decided to give it another try.

    I was also at the game, aged 11. What has not been mentioned in the aforementioned threads (unless I missed the points) is that we played with 10 men after Derek Ufton dislocated his shoulder (no subs in those days) and, secondly, we went from 5-1 down to 6-5 up, only for John Hewie to put through his own goal; so we had to start again to win the match!

    5 goal Johnny Summers didn't play beyond that season and sadly passed away 2 years later.

    I was there too, a few days before my 13th birthday. I can never forget Ufton (who played cricket for Kent in the summer) jumping for headers with his dislocated shoulder and the joy of Summers getting the winner. I think he still holds the best goals for match ratio of any Charlton striker (100 in 171 appearances). If only we had someone half that prolific now.

    With just nine minutes remaining, the scoring was not done and Huddersfield equalised through Stan Howard (only playing because 17-year-old future Manchester United legend Denis Law was rested) with a shot that flew in off Charlton defender John Hewie. 6-6. But, with emotions running high, there was always going to be a final twist and it came with the last kick of the game. Summers fed Ryan and the big attacker slammed home the 11th goal of the second-half to give the home side an improbable 7-6 victory.

    That was the first game I ever went to, 9 years old at the time, hooked me for life.
