  • Updated and re-opened this with just a few days of the window to go.

What are we thinking squad wise ?

The clear thing for me is how much the squad has been trimmed, and how unbalanaced it is in certain areas. If you strip out some of the U21s unlikely to feature, it leaves a squad of:

    Goalkeepers
    1.Ben Hamer - 2014
    2.Nick Pope - 2014

    Defenders
    3.Chris Solly - 2014
    4.Michael Morrison - 2014
    5.Dorian Dervite - 2014
    6.Leon Cort - 2014
    7.Richard Wood - 2014
    8.Rhoys Wiggins - 2014
    9.Cedric Evina - 2014

    Midfielders
    10.Lawrie Wilson - 2015
    11.Danny Green - 2014
    12.Mark Gower - 2014
    13.Johnnie Jackson - 2014
    14.Bradley Pritchard - 2014
    15.Andy Hughes - 2014
    16.Dale Stephens - 2014
    17.Jordan Cousins - 2014
    18.Callum Harriott - 2016
    19.Jordan Cook - 2014

    Strikers
    20.Yann Kermorgant - 2014
    21.Joe Pigott - 2014
    22.Marvin Sordell - Loan
    23.Simon Church - 2015
  • Reading that you would say we need a right back, a keeper, a left midfielder and a striker, and that's not replacing any outgoings or 'upgrading' on existing players
  • size of a world cup squad

If you count Wilson as a defender then we have cover in all areas other than goalkeeper.

But we are relying on inexperienced players such as Pigott, Pope and Cook for cover, some old and injury prone players such as Hughes and some that haven't really done it at this level (Green, Stephens) so far and a loan player up front.
  • 10 midfielders but still no consistent cohesion from that element of the team .. but as they are all on longish contracts, we're rather stuck with them all

The size of the squad is fine. Even Jose Mourinho says he wants a maximum of 22 players.

It's the quality that's the issue. Yes, we need a back up goalie, but if we're needing to reduce costs I can see the sense of leaving things as they are & getting in a loan if required.
  • I think that Powell maybe views Cook as a mistake now. He's not even getting games in the Cup. Shame we gave him a 2 year really.
  • More worrying is that every single one of those players' contracts expires in 2014, apart from Wilson, Harriott & Church!!

    Opening post updated.

To summarise, in comparison of where we are now to where we were at the end of the season, from the main 'impacting on the first team' squad we are:

Down perm - Sullivan, Button, Taylor, Wagstaff, Kerkar, Fuller, Haynes, Obika, Wright-Phillips
Down temp - Hollands, Green, Smith,

Gained perm - Wood, Gower, Church
Gained promoted - Cousins, Piggott, Pope
    Gained temp - Sordell, Stewart

  • If you're taking Button and Sullivan out perhaps you should add Pope and, now, possibly, Dillon Phillips in the "Gained Promoted" category?
  • Fair point on Pope, though i suspect he might be relegated again in the next few days !

Pope is already on the list.

Philips is still an U21 player yet to make his debut.

That summary is really useful. 12 players out, 8 players in.

The 4 difference is in 1 keeper, 2 strikers, 2 wide players and we've gained a central midfielder.

In terms of areas of the pitch

Keepers - possibly weaker than last year but our #1 is still #1
Full backs - as per last year
CB 3/4th choice exchanged for 3/4 choice
CM Hollands, who didn't feature exchanged for Gower, who will plus the bonus of Cousins
Wide lost Kerkar, Green and Wagstaff all of which rarely featured, gained Stewart who hopefully will (plus Harriot in the 2nd half of last year)
Striker. Lost Wright Phillips, Smith - rarely/never featured, Fuller and Haynes and Obika, all championship standard but two injury prone. Gained Church and Sordell both championship standard and the wild card that is Piggot.

    Broken down in this way,

    we're light a keeper,
    Defence is as last year,
CM is arguably strengthened (though is possibly still a weakness)
    Wide possibly strengthened
Striker - we've younger and fitter players but compared to last season we have only 3 champ quality rather than 4.

You can argue there is no progression but I don't think you can argue we are weakened significantly. If we add a 'keeper on loan and possibly Obika we've marginally strengthened and possibly have reduced costs.

Well done CP and the board.

But your point is precisely? Church & Sordell are two who are "already on the list" but still included in AFKA's summary: the idea of which is to highlight differences from last year.
And Pope is now 2nd choice keeper - until Button left he wasn't - so, for the sake of consistency, he should be seen as a squad addition if it's right to show a third choice keeper - Sullivan - in the squad deletions.
Again Philips is presumably now (perhaps temporarily) our 3rd choice keeper - just because he hasn't made his debut is neither here nor there is it. By that criterion, Stewart hasn't played yet and Smith is hardly a league regular. Just looking for some consistency.

My point is that Pope was counted as a part of the first team squad, not the U21s, when the list was first drawn so can't be seen as an addition. He was certainly 2nd choice at the end of last season when he played and Button was on the bench.

If we are being picky Gower was a part of the first team last season as well so shouldn't be an addition but you could argue it either way.
  • updated with Piggott contract. Hopefully one or two others will similarly be updated soon.
  • Alnwick now added
  • Doubt Laurie is the only right Midfield player in the squad?
