Photos of the river fleet.

A friend of mine posted a link to these on Facebook, thought some of the history buffs on here might be interested.

One of my passions ' the lost rivers of London'. You can still hear the Fleet under Farringdon Rd at one point. Was known as the red river due to the blood from the slaughter at Smithfields.

Our old office in Leytonstone has a river under it. We regularily had to pump out the basement. It is now owned by some dodgy eastend gang lord who used it to launder money (allegedly).

There are two excellent books on this subject called 'The Lost Rivers of London' by Nicholas Barton and 'London's Lost Rivers'by Paul Talling for those interested.

The river water was used to launder money? Or the premises?
