Saying he's joining the Charlton academy as a coach.

Anyone know anything about this?

We had him on trial years ago in pre-season, a couple of years later we had the other Russian on trial too Alexei Mikhailchenko - neither signed.

"all unnecessary"? That's a funny name for a tennis coach.

Sorry to briefly divert the thread back to Sergei Baltacha, but I remembered reading an article about an influential Belgian coach that he's worked with:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9421702.stm

It sounds like Baltacha is involved in some pretty cutting-edge stuff in terms of youth coaching.

Thought he had been coaching with the academy for a few years or at least he was 3 or 4 years ago. Maybe he's coming back. Also coached at some local schools.

True, but Baltacha was on trial with us pre-1989 so that actually makes him a Soviet at that stage!

Ukrainian playing for the USSR, but not Russian.

Did we really have a chance of signing Mikhailichenko? Someone playing in Serie A, who signed for then wealthy Rangers, whilst we were trying to get back to the valley.

Mikhalichenko came to us on trial after leaving Rangers, he played a few pre-season games but was not taken on. He would have been early-to-mid 30's and was coming back from injury.

    Must of been '96.
"All-in-all Mykhaylychenko won championship medals in 3 different leagues, and for 7 consecutive seasons – USSR in 1990, Italy in 1991 and Scotland from 1992 to 1996. He remained in Scotland until retiring from playing on May 31, 1996."
Not a bad record. A quality player.

Sounds about right, I know I was hoping we would sign him as I knew he had been a class player but I guess we could not take the risk money wise as he was coming back from injury.
