I stand to be corrected but I thought the first skinheads in late 60's were a development of mod culture i.e. fashion concious, sharply dressed. Into ska and rock steady.

That's just about right. Derived from mods who were fed up with the constant ever changing fashions that were moving towards flower power. Simples work wear was their prefered attaire.

The postcode wars of todays yoof had nothing on the old days when rivalries were from estate to estate, i think within Charlton there were 4 or 5 different mobs.

Wouldn't say that the second wave were more violent, while it was a bit of a fashion thing for a lot of the youngsters in the first wave (as you say development of mod culture) the violence was very much there. All the mobs at footie in the south & midlands were skins....further north they all seemed to be greasers/ long hairs & denim jackets.

Charltons skinhead days were over before the mid 70's and ceratinly well before 1978 which is mentioned above. In 78 Charlton had gone from skins, through boot boys to smooths or suade heads.
