Windows Live Messenger 81000306 connection error

edited July 2007 in Troubleshooting
My daughter uses MSN, i the past she had a problem when trying to connect to Windows Live Messenger, kept getting error 81000306. I am sure I did something in the Firefox options to fix it but can't remember what.

Since a Firefox update the otherday, she gets the same error and I can't find out (google) how to fix it again - although a ew suggestions might be proxy server related (whatever that is).

I have turned off the zonealarm firewall and that didn't help.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks!

  • you tried doing a headstand or turning your computer upside down?
  • Is your windows firewall still running?

The proxy server is your route out of a domain firewall to web traffic, which I doubt you have at home.

Start > Run > type "cmd" and in the dos window type "proxycfg" to see if you have any proxy settings set up and then "proxycfg -u" to update it to your pc's defaults.
  • Thanks

  • And your windows firewall?
  • Off.
Normally have Zonealarm firewall on, but that is off at the moment too.
Actually I had better turn it back on!
  • whack into google, that's all IT support dudes do, honest...
  • Can you use MSN logged in as a different user?

Some of us write those pages you read...
  • Step 1) Ctrl Alt Delete
Step 2) Turn it off, then turn it on again
Step 3) Log a Helpdesk Ticket
Step 4) Pull the plug out
    Step 5) Kick the PC

Nope, just registered and get same error code.

It's not really a fix but trying downloading another client, such as Trillian, GAiM or any messenger hybrid, it may just be the MSN service itself that is down.
  • been like it for a couple of days Stu

I'm sure that last time I found something to switch in the firefox or IE options that sorted it.
  • How long have you been using zonealarm?

    couple of years
  • This may be a hardware problem - try fiddling with your network card's connection settings (try a basic 10MB full duplex connection). What router do you use?
  • 6) Reinstall the application
    7) Reinstall the driver
    8) upgrade the application

Looks like one of us has cut him off, Raz - I'll draft up our consultancy bill before he gets back on line to complain.
  • I reset IE to default internet browser, no joy - but then rebooted PC and I can get in.
So it *looks* like something that firefox does - knew I should've stuck with IE!
  • Mind you that is probably the first time it's been rebooted since the problem.

Thanks for the advice guys ..... the gregory's in the ivory
