41, due to something normal people have never heard of called BODMAS, apparently. I still think it's 1...

If there was brackets it would be 41....but theres not so it's 1  8-)
  • 1. Anything times 0 is 0 isn't it? Use a calculator.

  • Isn't BODMAS only when there are brackets involved, hence the B. I'm pretty sure its 1.
  • Its got to be 1 as 40 + 40 x 0 = 0 so you just plus 1, easy.

it is 41 - unless brackets then you evaluate multiplication ahead of addition
  • NO! The gist of it is that the part of the equation involving the multiplication symbol is effectively bracketed off, whether they are there or not - bollocks isn't it... but true.

    1

    40+40 =80

    80x0 = 0

    0+1=1

  • In the real world the answer is 1.
  • No brackets so the answer is 1.

Never knew why that was the case when they taught us BODMAS at School but AA is correct.
  • There are two answers, the calculater way and the BODMAS way.... I feel sorry for kids doing maths...
  • That sum makes no sense, it's like a sentence with no grammar. Try expressing it in words or give an example of when you would do something like that.

  • I just put in a calculator and got 41. No idea how that works, another reason why I'm not taking maths for A level.

    Order of Operations

Do things in Brackets First. Example:

    yes 6 × (5 + 3)=6 × 8=
    48
    no 6 × (5 + 3) =30 + 3=
    33
    (wrong)

Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply, Divide, Add or Subtract. Example:

    yes 5 × 22=5 × 4=
    20
    no 5 × 22=102=
    100
    (wrong)

Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract. Example:

    yes 2 + 5 × 3=2 + 15=
    17
    no 2 + 5 × 3 =7 × 3=
    21
    (wrong)

Otherwise just go left to right. Example:

    yes 30 ÷ 5 × 3 =6 × 3=
    18
    no 30 ÷ 5 × 3 =30 ÷ 15=
    2
    (wrong)

How Do I Remember It All ... ? BODMAS !

    B
    Brackets first
    O
Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
    DM
    Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
    AS
    Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)
