That League One table looks ominous.
Basically, little room for slip ups.
And after three wins on the bounce you can’t help feeling like one is around the corner with this side.

We'd have certainly slipped up today :)
  • Drove 9 of us down in the minibus , nephew , mates son and boffins mate plus us 6.
they were all eating footy filth, pizza , chips , chicken burger etc outside and I can’t risk that with my guts and football/public filth toilets so I went  in the ground early .
dont care what Nathan Jones said I know what I saw 13.50 ish their ground force team were sweeping loads and loads of surface water away from near the far penalty area , 14.05 ref and assistants come out , the ball is stopping and not bouncing properly in certain areas and at this point in time is when the game should have been called off .
The ref conversed with ground staff and they stopped their sweeping . At this point with the ref stopping them I just expected it’s going to be called off , to give it another half hour was ridiculous , the rain was well set and forecast was for plenty more and we were that close to kick off , nothing was going to change and make it playable (yes in years gone by it would have been considered easily good enough to play but with todays woke society that’s not possible )
it was the right decision to call it off but should have been earlier .
anyway the rearranged fixture clashes with me washing my hair so I can’t make it .
1hr 20 mins back to Epping not to be sniffed at , too many Cadbury’s mini eggs on the journey home and I’m on the khazi now easing them out

This is shocking, the ref must be questioned if the conditions were as bad as this.
  • I can't remember exactly which year but we lost a derby at Selhurst against the stripeys when the ball stuck in the mud in the penalty box and a Palace forward had a tap-in as a result.

I don't remember leaving,  thinking "all part of the game, I've played in worse" etc.

Be careful what you wish for, some of you...

I know its only Nathan's word, but if the referee has called it off because of the forecast, rather than the conditions - Why wait so long then?
I don't know how you can call off a game because of what might happen.

Surely you start the match & then abandon it if needs be.
Golfie, if you start the game in these conditions and then have to call it off then you do that because the ball is not moving or it's become a risk to the players, also just suppose one of the sides had taken a two nil lead and the game got called off after 45 mins, the angst on here would be far worse.
That's a reasonable risk to take for both sides.
Doncaster Rovers at The Valley a few years back.....?
When we played Doncaster away later that season a female Donny fan had a right go at me because of that.
I politely told her that it wasn't mine or Charlton s fault the game was called off it was down to the Weather and the Ref.
She was still abusing me as her husband took her away.
    Bloody Norverners
Remember the game well, conditions suited attacking the Covered End , which we would have done 2nd half,  we would
have won anyway, but your right, fuck em, bloody norveners.
  • Woke.

    Wokey wokeness gone woke crazy.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes, in that Doncaster game the pitch was massively worse in the Covered End goalmouth, so we would have had the benefit in the second half. PLUS they were down to 10 men, so the postponement saved them from a 6-3 defeat!

This is true. It certainly wasn't a given they would have won it. As you say the difference between both ends was massive. In terms of today, I think this benefits us. I feel for those that went of course but the Christmas schedule is harsh in terms of games and we have avoided that. We are in a situation where, understandably, Jones wants to keep the side unchanged which has its own risks.  We ought to be a lot fresher than Reading on Saturday in what is an important game to win. We haven't got a fixture congestion issue so the Crawley game shouldn't be a problem to fit in.
  • I set off at 1:30pm and thought it would get called off, but foolishly continued the drive thinking better to be safe than sorry.

Ref should have called it off 4 hours earlier to give people a chance, absolutely dreadful decision.

Have to say as well, in all my years driving, that's been the worst conditions I've driven in I can remember.

I saw the aftermath of one accident, I think I saw traffic cause of a local-ish one, and was nearly part of one where another driver was driving erratically which caused a car near me to slightly swerve.

I genuinely can't stand people who drive like twats in these conditions. You save seconds to at best minutes and it's so risky.

I never normally do it but I actually had a go at one driver today. Felt a bit bad afterwards but it winds me up how people don't consider others in their cars or the cars they're driving near.

It's something ridiculous like a 30% increase of a car fatality in even light rain and people swerve and undercut in torrential rains.

75% of weather conditions related accidents occur cause of rain, and 45% + happen during rainfall.

Sorry for the rant but I couldn't believe some of the state of the driving I saw today, winds me right up. Just added to my anger with the postponement
    Can't wait for the Vlog.

Not the worst thing in the world, players could do with some rest having played the same team in all games over Xmas
    You didn’t travel then ?

Tbf I could have just recorded myself moaning about how shit other drivers are for 20 minutes. 😄
This is the content we demand!
  • Hopefully bids in for half of Reading’s squad before the weekend, whether the interest is genuine or not (in reality I’d happily take about six of their players)
  • Part of me was glad it was called off. The Crawley weirdos I was stood next to and started talking to me like I was one of them I’m not sure I would have lasted the game to be fair.
    Creepy.

There was a car completely smashed up in the outside lane just as I pulled on the M23 on the way back

That was @braziliance . He was posting while driving
    Brilliant 😂

On a more serious note though, it does sound like it was a Charlton fan who was unfortunately part of one of the accidents, thankfully, he sounds ok:

Not sure if that's the one I saw, as the one on the way back looked a bit more nasty.

I still can't believe how bad it was driving from Kent, the only time I've ever been driving and thought 'yeah I can't see shit, this might be it'

Boxing Day 1984; ball over the top, stuck dead in the mud and Kevin Mabbutt didn't break stride as he cracked it into the bottom corner. Steve Gritt was the goalie after Tony Lange broke his ankle about 15 mins into the game.

There was the FA Cup match in the late 80s at The Hawthorns where it pissed down all day (and I'm sure the urinals in the away end didn't have a roof) with big puddles in the pitch but the match went ahead.

Lower league West Brom turned over top flight Charlton (for the benefit of the MoTD cameras, probably why the game didn't get called off) with a goalmouth puddle helping the Baggies.
1989/90 season. Tony Ford got their goal. Without doubt the worst pitch condition I've ever seen. Far worse than the Chelsea sand-pitch, the Coventry 99% mud pitch or the West Ham TV FA Cup match at Selhurst...which were all plenty bad.

But...as gutting as it was to lose (and it was yet another kick in the guts during a mega-tough season) it was a memorable game with plenty of action.
