Disappointed he has yet to play as a ten, in behind two strikers, say ML and TC.
I could be wrong but don't think he's ever played there. Anyone in the 10 is going to need the legs to get back and help defend down the middle. At 33 I don't think he's going to be very good at that.
A good penalty taker, but looks fairly innocuous in open play. Not helped by the poor service, and hoofball tactics admittedly
That doesn't make sense. He's scored 2 penalties for us, which means 5 ftom open play...
He gets on the end of balls into the box, (2 that I can think of, 1 in the BSM trophy against Cambridge, and 1 against Southend in the FA cup).
And what about his brilliant winner against Birmingham? And his fantastic diving header against Bolton?
There's some revisionist thinking going on here...
5 goals in open play, 1 of which was against a NL team in the FA Cup, and another against a much changed Cambridge in the EFL Trophy, so 3 open play goals in the league, in 14 games (8 starts and 6 sub appearances). Which is ok, but hardly spectacular. Which is why I said he's looked fairly innocuous, as how many shots has he had in the box this season?
Some of that is due to our hoofball tactics, the lack of crosses from wide positions, and the lack of creative quality in midfield.
Showing up really well in every category apart from “non-penalty xG” which could be a service problem (likely) but also could be a ‘not getting into the right position’ problem.
At least he’s mostly clinical when he is afforded an opportunity.

OK, but in that case, you'd have to exclude Alfie May's goal against CVPM in the FA Cup. And all the penalties he scored. Do that, and see how Godden does in comparison to May.
Or, are you saying May wasn't much cop outside of his penalties, too?
Godden has an eye for goal, and has a great penalty on him, but he doesn't do enough off the ball imo. Isn't anywhere near as impactful as May was for us.
He just simply doesn't have Mays pace or versatility. He's unfortunate that he lacks the players behind him to present chances, but truthfully I don't think he's quick enough to play off the shoulder like May.
Not been a bad signing by any stretch, but isn't what our manager himself says he expects from a forward. Only one who comes close is Miles to Jones description.
My honest assessment so far is right player, wrong club. He'd look a lot better in a possession dominant team where he doesn't have to rely as much on an intense work rate, like Birmingham for instance, I reckon he'd be on more goals than May and Stansfield, ironically.

Yeah, Godden was supposed to be the more industrious version of Alfie May - better in the air, better at holding it up, etc. I like him, he's clever in the box, but he's pretty quiet outside of it.
Matt Godden has 4 league goals in his last 10 league games, Alfie has 1. Alfie is going through one of his patches, I'm sure he'll score again soon and when he does he'll likely have another flurry of goals in a short space of time. I do think it's less about him being a 10 though and more about him being a player who benefits from having the team very geared towards his contribution. Apples played him as a 10 and sometimes as a winger and still got a lot of goals out of him for a period because he still played through him. In fact, as far as I can remember he went on a daft run where he scored 11 goals in 10 games, only played two of as a striker and didn't score in one of those games. He's very capable of scoring from the 10 position but he's having a barren patch. He's adaptable and he's due a run of goals, we'll see if he makes it happen.

May scored 23 league goals last season, including 6 penalties, so 17 in open play.
And to me he was able to impact the game more than Godden, even with lousy service, as he's quicker and a better presser. May could be a nuisance to opponents.
Which isn't to say that Godden doesn't have his strengths, it's just that we're not seeing enough of him.

Exactly. It's hard because anyone who was coming in to replace May had a hell of a job on their hands.
In an alternate timeline, we actually signed Godden when he was in his prime instead of Peterborough and he became a club legend.
He comes across very likeable, and is the type that just 'gets it'. Just a shame we don't play to his actual strengths and we are useless in possession.
I think that as a striker he often drops deep to do just that.
It's a bit different to actually playing in midfield... The 10 has to cover some serious ground.
I agree, but part of me wants to say that we dont really play with a midfield anyway, we bypass them on the ball and they are ineffective off the ball. Why not say fuck it and just load the attack. Its a little bit Karel Fraeye but still.
In an ideal world we would have done what we'll run L1 clubs do and held our betters players then added. Imagine a front line up of May, Godden, Leaburn, Kanu and a PL loanee. No Ahadme or Hylton and having found a way to move on Aneke.

Doesn't do enough off the ball. The second coming of Derek Hales then.

Blanks for both Alfie and Godden last night. Slight difference to the usual as Godden played as a 10 and May actually played as the striker for Brum. That's now 1 in his last 11 for Alfie and none in his last 7. It's not his longest run, he scored 1 in 13 for us last season and went 8 games without a goal but still managed 23 overall so he's probably due a run of goals soon. I do wonder if not knowing if he'll play and where is affecting him though
The Alfie May debate is a moot point. Anyone with an ounce of sense will know that the squad would be stronger with Alfie in it.
Hypothetically, if Brum said we can have Alfie back on Jan 1st for nothing would any Charlton fan say no?
A no from me. Doesn't get on with our manager, he's wife doesn't want to be south and heard he had problems with his neighbour, so probably would not get the best out if him
