First 5 winners at Cheltenham all Irish trained. Very appropriate on St Patrick's Day.

I gave no idea why people in this country always celebrate St Paddy's day....none at all. The Irishigmore St. George's day as do a lot of English who decry the red cross flag.
We always celebrated it because our parents were Irish.
There was a huge Irish community in both my primary and secondary schools.
We would always learn new Irish dance routines and put on a show for the old folk in the community, they loved it.
Green, white and (back then) gold ribbons in your hair. A sprig of shamrock pinned to your chest and off you went.
Then as we got older, we just went down the pub for the craic.

Lucky for me I got to celebrate both.
And still do, even now I’ve moved to Ireland.

That’s why the majority of people celebrate it.
Don’t be such a misog, join in, Slainte 🍻

Perhaps those people celebrating it in "this country" (you don't know where all posters are living) are in fact Irish? Perhaps the people celebrating it have family from Ireland? Perhaps you're just a wum? Perhaps don't post in this thread?

    Also, red cross flag? Really?

Probably because there is a history if immigration and a huge proportion of the UK has some Irish ancestry. Also, its a good excuse for a drink because of the association between Irish people and drink. Oh and about 3% of the UK population lives on the island of Ireland. If you don't want to celebrate it you don't have to.
To everyone else lá fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh.
Why do we wish to assimilate all immigrants but the Irish don't  need to...

I am not anti Irish but I don't walk round singing Deutschland over alas because a lot of me is German.  In fact my grandmother,  despite being here since 1900 felt obliged to hide it for some reason.
She adopted Britain so why can't  the Irish

    Uber alles

    Because the British adopted Ireland.
