Bolton v Charlton | Sat 28 Jan | 3pm KO | Match Preview, Predictions, News & Views

Bolton Wanderers v Charlton Athletic
Saturday 28th January 2017 … 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Robert Jones

Introduction

Everyone enjoy the break last week… Yup, well let’s try to go again

Last Saturday saw Scunthorpe United visiting the Valley, the morning of the game saw fans from both clubs waking up with anticipation of the battle to come later that afternoon. At 10am though those plans were thrown in the bin as the match was called off, cold weather in the South East of England saw a number of fixtures abandoned due to freezing temperatures meaning we now have two games in hand on our rival Play-Off sides.

This Saturday sees the Addicks visit the North of England and a trip back to where our relegation back to League One was confirmed, hopefully though our fixture against Bolton this season will be more entertaining than last season.

The Opposition
Name: Bolton Wanderers | Manager: Phil Parkinson
Ground: Reebok Stadium

When the whistle was blown up at the Reebok Stadium in April, it meant that the Addicks were doomed to join their opponents (who’d already been relegated) in League One this season… Naturally both sides were deemed the favourites for promotion yet sadly many knew that only one side would truly mount a promotion challenge.

Unfortunately that club is Bolton rather than Charlton and under Phil Parkinson it looks like our ex-Manager could finally earn that richly deserved second promotion into the Championship. Since the 1-1 draw back at the Valley, Bolton have kept pace with the automatic promotion slots and despite being five points behind second place they could still easily avoid the Play-Offs themselves. As always home form is key with the Trotters only failing to win on five occasions (with just two loses at home).

Both sides came into the Division as favourites; both sides have lost the same amount of games… This Saturday could be stark proof for Addicks fans for a classic example of… What if!!

Charlton Team News
Having been sent off against Millwall; Jorge Teixeira was due to miss the match against Scunthorpe and be available for Bolton yet that is now no longer the case and will serve his suspension this Saturday instead. The extra week off though has given Patrick Bauer an opportunity to recover from his back injury which he suffered at the end of the Millwall game so will hopefully return in defence. Both Josh Magennis and Lewis Page will remain side-lined so there will be huge question marks from fans to see who leads the line

Rudd
Solly | Konsa | Bauer | Chicksen
Forster-Caskey | Crofts
Byrne | Aribo | Holmes
Novak

Substitutes Bench: Phillips | Johnson | Dasilva | Ulvestad | Watt | Ajose | Dijksteel

Prediction
I’ll be saying this a lot in my previews now but we must turn draws into victories if we want to achieve the Play-Offs this season… Despite that a win at Bolton this Saturday will be extremely difficult and this is one game we can ill afford to lose so a point could be the best we can hope for.

Very tough match to be playing with a make shift back four. I expect Bolton to win the league this season so I am not expecting a lot.

    3-0 defeat.

However, I think we will play well for the first 50/60 minutes but the lack of goals in our team will lead to them winning comfortably.

    Comfortable away win 4-0.
  • Think we may scrape a draw.
  • Hope my unbeaten away run this season continues however only seen us win once, at Walsall. so probably another draw beckons which I'll take now.
  • Should roll these babies over no problem 0-3, then back to the Karl's mothers gaff for a lovely steaming hot plate of Scouse and a good old sing song!
  • Bolton didn't play last Saturday either, so both teams will be fresh/rusty

We often do better against the "big" clubs, I predict a tight 0-0
  • need minimum of a point from this then February we need to be winning majority of games we have 7 and all against on paper beatable opposition, any chance of play offs we need to win 5 of them and draw the other 2, but i just cant see this team doing it the league winning year we didnt have the best team and it was a stronger league that year, but the team just clicked and the club was a happy place. now not so much.
  • That team of ForeverAddickted's has no goals in it. If Robinson plays 4-2-3-1 without the right person up front, he's an obstinate idiot.
  • Going with my Bolton supporting mates so it's sit on hands time. Can't see past a draw

  • I can't see us winning this one 2-0 to Bolton. Both goals coming from Ser pieces.
  • 1-1 We have more draws than a Soho escort
  • Their last home game shows they are falable. But that said they could come out out really angry about desperate to put it right. Quite often this season we have played better against the top 6. Hope fully with Paddy back and a fitter Ricky. Who knows. A difficult one to call this one.
  • I think we'll lose. Players will be distracted by all this takeover talk.

It's the Macron Stadium now, @ForeverAddickted, not the Reebok. You'd better raise your game, there won't be any second chances from the Red Bull legal team if you start referring to the Red Bull Energy Arena as The Valley!

Ah but I'm a purist... It was called the Reebok Stadium when it was built - I know that was just because of the current Sponsor at the time but cant bring myself to call a Stadium its new name when the Sponsor changes nearly every year

I totally agree with those sentiments mate. Just giving you an early warning that you could easily end up having the arse sued off you if you don't refer to the Red Bull Insomnia and Heart Palpitations Sports Dome by its correct name once the takeover goes through.
  • Tough game but I'll go for a Chris Powell style 1-0 win to Charlton.

  • 1 nil win for me
  • Can't see Holmes being fit enough to start. He was out for, what was it, 10 weeks maybe? And he's been in training for around three weeks. I suspect we'll see DaSilva start on the left, although I could also see Watt starting there in a very attacking move from Robinson.

2-0 Bolton, honeymoon period over for karl. the club can concentrate on more important things like getting KM's appointment to the FA over the line and forecasting how Joe Aribo's departure in the summer for £4m can cover some of Roland's losses for the 2017/18 season
  • any one of the three possible results would not surprise me ..
I have grave concerns about our goal scoring ability ... 1 up front will not do the biz for us especially when the 1 aint Magennis ..
as @ForeverAddickted writes, we must start winning, we are the bore draw team of the season (shades of Edward Woodward R I P as 'The Equaliser') .. I don't think that Saturday will be the start of a winning streak, though I REALLY hope that I am wrong

    Bolton Wanderers 1 v CAFC 1
  • Can't see Novak starting to be honest, only just returned from injury. I think KR will change the formation from a 1 up top to a 2. Wouldn't be surprised to see Watt + Ajose start together and around the 60th minute mark Novak comes on for the last half an hour for Watt.
  • Being totally resigned to a mid table finish, I think it'll be a wonderful game resulting in an entertaining 0-0.
  • Probs 1-1 again
  • Following yet another brilliant transfer window from our leader
