I think the worst lawyer in the world could succesfully defend Powell against that lunatic's attacks! He would haveknown full well that Riga didn't play the network players either but tried to insuate that he did. I long for the day when a well informed and researched interviewer gets the chance to talk to the coward. He gave so many opportunities to be picked to pieces, but it is unreasonable for a Belgian reporter to know any detail to challenge him on. Less forgivable that many English ones don't either but that is a different matter!
This does show that RD still doesn't get it. Or, more accurately, he does get it but is not prepared to change. At least we know where we stand. Keep the pressure on, especially in Belgium where it really hits home. Make it as uncomfortable as possible for him on his home turf (legally). We can make your 70's miserable Mr Douchbag. Welcome to the English football fanatic.
My reading of this is that he will sell in the next 5 years or so. Although whether this will involve an internal transfer to other family members is not clear.
As of today St Truiden are doing slightly better than last season, Ujpest slightly worse, AD Alcorcon much worse and Carl Zeiss Jena are running away with their League. In fact CZJ may end up being the only success story he gets this season from his football ventures.
Given the performance against Peterborough I think mid table mediocrity is more likely for us than not.
Given the tumbling value of the pound - which will continue through 2017 and 2018 - acquiring Charlton Athletic from Roland Duchatelet may become a relatively cheap option for anyone wanting to own a UK club.

And to remind everybody, he only has 49% of the club, and is therefore not able to directly tell the coach what to do. CZJ explicitly rejected the network player concept whene he first bought them, and we got that directly from a CZJ employee.
Simple really, isn't it Roland? The less you interfere with stuff you know jack all about, the more your return on investment.

Have there not been any transfers between CZJ and network clubs at all?
You'd think it would be surprising that he bought them without finding out if they'd be interested in using the network in that way. Given its RD, it's not. He clearly did little research into us or English football, or where he did he used people who didn't do a very good job of it.
Part of his statement he really needs questioning on at the earliest opportunity is this: 'Then Jose Riga came in and with all the other players that the other coach had said were bad players, got 1.5 points per match and saved the club, then it all stopped'. I think Powell played more network players than Riga did -the players he relied on were the established players - Powell's players. AA was a mainstay but Powell wanted him - he was at the club before Duchetelet's ink on the contract was dry. His statement is blatently wrong and off the back of it he has called a legend an idiot. He needs to explain the facts in front of him, not his invention. It is only fair. I think he needs to be sued.

Well, if there have been any (and I never heard of any) they were only with the explicit consent of CZJ management. We were told very openly when we visited Jena in 2015 by Andreas Trautmann, the marketing manager (and CZJ fan) that the 50 plus 1 rule meant he did not have the ability to insist on such things. Andreas said they listened to his ideas and politely told him they were not interested.
It seemed to us that he is happy enough there with the commercial development which he will fund to make it more like Sint-Truiden, and the ego massaging that he gets because he has invested in production for his main business in the region. He originally wanted to buy Rot-Weiss Erfurt which is nearer his units, but it literally was not for sale. As a businessman he is probably welcome in that region of Germany which is only slowly awakening and does not have enough good jobs for its young people; but my goodness he seeks the recognition for his "good works" . I think ego is a big issue with him.More than with even most successful businessmen.

I have decided just to avoid watching this moron and his team ruining our Club. When he goes, I will be back. Wake up you dozy old bugger, go away and count your money. Leave football to football people.

RD considers himself to be a patriarch, and his football clubs - especially their fans - as errant and wilful children. He thinks his money makes everything he does ok.
The Ethels can re-assure themselves that he has "only" 49,98 per cent of the shares, but his hand-picked and complaisant supervisory board and a CEO whose day job is working for RD in Erfurt ensure that His Will Be Done. FCC were undoubtedly not besieged by other investors anxious to bankroll substantial annual losses, or to offer a significant contribution to the €41 million stadium development project. Truly a Faustian pact.
I didn't get very far with the Belgian TV company:
Dear Heather
Thank you for your reaction. The VRT is not responsible for comments made by studio guests. Therefore it is best for you to contact Mr Duchatelet yourself. Kind regards
Sounds like they are about as fed up with him as we are!
To be frank in the interview he mishandles a quite straightforward set of questions and comes across as under rehearsed and tetchy.
What he could have said was something like "....yes, but that was nearly 3 years ago and we admit that we misjudged a few things when taking on an English club. The amount we've put into Charlton since 2014 will pay off and with the manager we now have - who's been successful at this level - we are now hopeful fans will see the success everyone wants...." If pressed he could have added "....We can't rewrite the past, but we need to be clear in January 2014 the team were bottom of their league and didn't even have a proper pitch to play on. In those circumstances any owner would have been as anxious to turn things around quickly....." Not great answers, but, the sort of thing you'd expect (and other owners would roll out).
The economic views he was interviewed about after the questions on football relate to his desire and opinion that everyone in Europe should have a fixed income guaranteed by the state. This stuff (originally called Social Credit) has been around in fringe political circles since the '20's but has never gone anywhere despite being an "interesting" idea.
He's basically a very successful businessman who's bought some football clubs (because he likes football) and who's got eccentric political views.
I sometimes wish that he would just really stick the knife in, he has every right to!! Just too nice in all honesty as he could really go to town on the Walloonian buffoons, irrespective of how much they would twist it after the event.

1 He doesn't want football success. He only wants a player farm.
2 I don't believe he likes football. If he did he wouldn't be wrecking clubs and abusing managers and fans.
'Well I've stuffed this up good and proper, I had this idea of a network structure under financial fair play.
We underestimated what the chapionship requirements were, not surprising given I trusted Driesen and Meire.
Sacking Chris Powell, and our player hiring strategy under me were wholly responsible for the relegation of Charlton.
I am a clever guy and can recognise that as well as the next person.
It is frustrating that getting a new manager in does not resolve these problems but that is my default position.
Hopefully we will win a few games and people will stop coming out to my home town and disrupting my post game dance which is a feature of the club here now.

We don't give up quite so easily, though.
They may not be responsible for his comments, but they are responsible for providing him with a platform to make them to a large audience.
They can't just wave their hands and say "not our problem".
A very good point made. If the players Roland bought to the club were any good, why aren't they still here? JJ who may be past it, Solly can't move clubs cos of his knees; bar untried kids there is barely anyone currently playing who was here last season, let alone when he bought the club less than 3 years ago.

That's the press all over. They break the stories and when they get complaints it's a case of 'Hey, don't shoot the messenger'.

He is a decent, honest, inspirational man - everything Duchatelet isn't.
Why can't the Belgian programme give us a right of reply? These are blatant lies he has peddled. You would have to be a half-wit to debate that fact as evidence backs it up. Even those small number of anti-Powell idiots surely can't say he wasn't lying when he spoke about the network players. They may say Riga was a better manager, but he didn't play the network players Duchatelet was insinuating he did and that is a fact.
