Leyton Orient v Charlton Athletic
Saturday 23rd July 2016 … 3pm Kick-Off
Pre-Season Friendly
IntroductionGreetings from Leytonstone and East London… Home of the East End and famous streets like Brick Lane, this is where EastEnders is shot and where you should keep your eyes open for the likes of Jack the Ripper (Don’t worry he usually hangs around Whitechapel), it’s an area where the London 2012 Olympics were held is of course home to the birthplace of Cockney Rhyming Slang... Yes I will be doing this every away game…
This Saturday you’ll want to jump on the
John Wayne, we all know it’s only a quick
Walnut Whip as its time for these friendlies to get serious, it’s no longer a time for tinkering… For Russell Slade this Saturday it’s time for him to now find out his best squad for the season ahead
So as I’m sure the Kray twins said a few times… Let’s get down to Business
The OppositionName: Leyton Orient |
Manager: Andy Hessenthaler
Ground: Brisbane Road |
League: English League Two
Pre-Season Friendlies- Italy U19s 1-0 Leyton Orient
- Wealdstone 1-2 Leyton Orient
- Dover Athletic 2-0 Leyton Orient
- Woking 0-2 Leyton Orient
Naturally 2011/12 was the last time we came up against our neighbours from slightly across the water.. It was the last day of 2011 when the two sides first met that season, the SKY cameras were in town and the Addicks had only lost one match all season (a 1-0 loss away at Stevenage)…
We didn’t get off to the best of starts when Goalkeeper: Ben Hamer was sent off within minutes of the match starting meaning we were always up against it… Yet within a few hours of welcoming in 2012, the Addicks were losing their second game of the season (also 1-0) and would only lose once more on the road that season.
It’s been very different seasons for the two clubs since that day…
In charge of Leyton Orient that day was Russell Slade (who is now Charlton Manager) and both sides have since suffered relegation with Orient dropping down a division two seasons ago… They didn’t have a bad start and looked like making an instant return until poor form saw them drop away from the Play-Offs, now Andy Hessenthaler (ex-Gillingham) will be hoping it’ll be second time lucky for his side that’ll now forever be playing in the shadow of the Olympic Stadium and West Ham.
Team NewsStarting with Leyton Orient and one name fans should keep an eye on is Jay Simpson, a Striker who has been heavily linked with Charlton it’ll be interesting to see if he makes any kind of appearance against us tomorrow…
In terms of their transfer activity, ex-Manager: Kevin Nolan has left the club along with ex-Addick: Bradley Pritchard… Robbie Weir will be a name to watch (Having played a big part in Burton’s promotion last season) whilst Charlton fans will feel aggrieved that Yvan Erichot wasn’t offered to us after signing from St Truiden.
And so on to the Addicks… As already mentioned I’m sure we’ll start to get a good indication of who’ll start against Bury, yet until a new Goalkeeper is found you’d expect Dillon Phillips to start once more, neither Chris Solly nor Nick Ajose took part in our Austria fixtures so will potentially be unavailable
Finally… Ademola Lookman should soon return to the squad after England U19s were knocked out of the European Championships last night, having played in two matches (75mins / 90mins respectively) you should expect Lookman to be up to full fitness like everyone else, yet this Saturday might just come too soon for the youngster.
PredictionAs you can see from the above, Leyton Orient (like us) have had a mixed bag of friendly results with their only victories coming up against non-league opposition… Of course as we enter the final two weeks of pre-season anything that has happened prior to now will no longer matter as we’re now into the serious business of friendly matches… Still you’d expect a Charlton victory as anything else could see us in for a hard season.
Comments
The squad is so far away from the above its absolutely scandalous. No lessons have been learned as far as I can see. The level of incompetence is staggering.
My early if cautious optimism is practically gone.
Just get out of our club you useless bastards.
2-1 to the real East Enders!
(i.e. Wouldnt be surprised if he was involved against Ipswich or RKC yet then again wouldnt be surprised if he didnt appear)
Tex/Bauer/Ceballos wouldn't have been able to play anyway as they will have had hangovers from their night up Air & Breathe on the pull.
Fox would've got a call from the plumbing firm he works for, asking him to go in at short notice beacuse Mrs Threlfall had a leaking pipe.
Solly had forgotten about his mum's birthday bbq, so rang Russell pretending to have a belly ache.
And Harriott was up all night at the pet hospital beacuse his cat had swallowed a fly. No-one could work out why the cat had swallowed the fly and it was suspected that perhaps he'd die.
And we had no goalkeeper anyway.
Leyton Orient 2 v CAFC 2
The above of course affects what is in his mind for a pattern of play as well.
Solly ... Bauer ... Teixeira ... Fox
Holmes ... Crofts ... Jackson ... Lookman
Ajose ... Novak
Would be a lovely team to see this season... How many times will we see it? (If all remain at the club)
Getting home will be fun.
Because these are only friendlies I'm not rushing to write up the previews for them (Wasn't even planning on doing them) as there isnt the interest in them from everyone unlike the proper League and Cup matches

The friendly is likely to come too soon for Nicky Ajose who has been struggling with an ankle knock, but should be fit to return for the visit of Ipswich Town to The Valley on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Dillon Phillips will continue in goal after keeping a clean sheet in the midweek friendly in Austria.
