Ex Reading Captain's write up of Saturday

Just saw Rich Cawley posted this link on twitter

Sorry Ady, you've got that wrong mate. We had a game plan. It worked, you lost. Accept the defeat. We came up against a team that had hit 3 goals in each of their last 5 home games.

We were of obviously the more clinical on the day, and to call us average with players like Solly, Bikey, TBH, JBG and Vet in the team just shows you haven't done your homework sufficiently enough to be given a column

  • LOL. Ady's got a career in politics ahead of him when he retires from football.
  • Just sounds like some very sour grapes!!

Would not describe us as average, given our form so far this season as our league position says better than average, but he was right in saying we appear light up front - because we are.

Clearly the fact that balls we being played how Bikey and TBH would have asked for goes to show that they didn't prepare for the match. Compare against Fulham who did do their homework and overturned us by playing to their advantage and against ours.

Yes they should accept the defeat, and in the oft quoted words on this website, "move on". ;-)
  • I was listening to BBC Radio Berks on the way home and it seemed to be the phrase of the night "An average well organised team" spouted out like a politician in the belief that you say ti enough times every body will believe it. If we are average then what does it make Reading who were unable to take advantage of any averageness.
  • Table doesnt lie Reading... If we were average in the position we were in, what does that make Reading?
  • personally i thought reading were very average. Toothless up front and nothing much else going for them and we defended well, took our chances (almost, damn you tucadean!). The average 1-0 away win really from our point of view.
  • Ady Williams ........ not exactly a household name, is he?

"I felt they were lightweight up front"

The goal was scored by a striker, who has 8 goals already.
  • Nonsense.

No point in reading the blokes comments to be honest.

    Dis-credits him more then charlton.
  • Burnley were just above average last season, apart from the fact they had 2 very good strikers, Ings and Vokes.
They were very organised and tough to beat. It didn't stop them getting automatic promotion.

Didn't he sing " Can't get over to losing to you" ?? ;)
  • You told him pal, don't mess with The Cabbles Guy !
  • Can't see anything that is disrespectful in the article. We are not an outstanding team but we can defend and fight for our points.

You could say the whole division is average with so many teams covered by so few points or you could say how strong the division is where anyone can beat anyone, depends on your viewpoint.

We could probably say the same thing about our games against Middlesbrough and Wednesday, they were there for the taking but defended well.

He actually criticises Reading for playing to the strengths of our centre halves.

Yeah that's what he said in the reply to my tweet. For me it grated on me because it's part of football. Some teams, even the great Jose Mourinho's Chelsea come with a game plan and play to their strengths. My point is our performance (based on the write up, comments on here) wasn't average. Average, in this instance, was too strong a term here for me anyway
  • Yes, to call our display 'average' was rather off. We weren't flamboyant, but we were confident and effective. I enjoyed watching the passing build-up to our goal in slow motion...lovely . Igor moves up to the defensive line, checks, looks....as does Solly. The cross is perfectly delivered to Igor, who has a defender either side of him. His glancing header is a gem.
We did the basics well, thereafter...and did not concede possession in dangerous circumstances as we have done all too often in other matches. It spoke of a team that is learning and better because of it. This was not an average performance. It was solid work and it won us three points.
  • They only had 2 shots on target against an average team...... Oh well.
  • Never heard of this Ady Williams so looked him up

Ex Spanner, only 12 games but probably enough to make him this much of a twat

    what's that make BBP?
    ;-)

Agree with this on the whole. I think we are an average side in an ordinary league with no outstanding teams. A very well drilled and organised outfit with an okay midfield and a very good striker. Don't think he has been disrespectful at all but I stopped caring about what others think of our team after the sour grapes shown by Norwich. Where are Reading? We're letting the football do the talking.

I think he needs to concentrate on his team, 5 defeats out of 8 away and only 5 goals scored is below average.
  • touchy Charlton fans being over precious ... who'd have thought it

I think the problem we have is that we can call our team average/ordinary/nothing special but woe betide an outsider saying that about us.

I don't agree. Off the back of that performance I don't think it was right to categorise us as 'average'.

We've lost 2 all season, sit just outside the play offs, have some decent players. If we were lower/mid table then maybe.

  • "The goal came out of the blue. We weren't tight enough stopping the cross the defenders and the boss won't be happy that the striker was left unmarked in the box."

Not really out of the blue then.

It was our first attempt on goal and he's right they didn't stop Solly's cross and Igor was left with a free header.

a reformed spanner, he saw the error of his ways and decided to join the mighty Charlton and now he is reformed :-)
  • I live near Reading and have got fed up with the comments this week....we won get over it...they are like Norwich, punched way above their weight in recent seasons, dont forget they have millions of parachute money not our fault they have wasted it. They are an average Championship club with average fans with delusions of grandeur.
