If pricing a job and you think that job may be troublesome or one that you are not bothered to do, you may price very high to make it worth your while or make sure you price yourself out of the job. Maybe contractually COG has to negotiate with Charlton as the transfer price was met. It is pretty clear that COG does not want to play for Charlton.
After this long drawn out and very public negotiation, COG has blown it in terms of the Charlton supporters. This is even if in the extremely highly unlikely chance that wages could be agreed.
The deal was dead in the water after a few days. Not sure why this thing has dragged out and played out so public for so long.
I remember Jordan stating about five seasons ago that they were trying to sign champ players on frees and they nearly all wanted ten grand a week. O'Grady' never looked champ quality, bar one season at a woeful Barnsley. Whoever spotted him needed taking aside and severely questioning they're professional ability. Thank god he's not coming.
There are Prem players (first team players) on less than £12k per week. The average (mean) Prem salary is around £35-40k per week - the median nearer £15-20k - the median Championship salary is £6-10k per week (that's HALF A MILLION POUNDS PER YEAR folks). There are some on more of course but that's the nature of averages! and there are some on less - and the average is raised by the likes of QPR and Leicester and the relegated teams who are stuck with big contracts. A lot of people on here have over inflated ideas about what most professional footballers earn.
And on this I can claim to be ITK.
I'm not being critical, and I don't doubt what you say, but can you narrow those numbers down? If the average wage in the Championship is £10k a week then a striker that scored 15 goals in a relegated side should be asking for £12k (he might not get it but that's where he should start the negotiation). However, if the average wage is is £6k a week that makes asking for £12k ridiculous.
You also point out that £6k-10k a week is half a million (presumably to make the point that it's a lot of money) but if the average is actually £6k that is, naturally, a lot less - £300k.
I would also point out that despite the obvious impact of the super high earners in the Premier League making the mean average higher, the median might be a little misleading as it probably includes a number of young players (probably a lot in fact) that affects the median significantly. For example it is possible that every club has as many players that don't make the first team as they have that do. So it is possible that the median wage is what a reserve that never plays a Premier League game earns. Again this is not a criticism of your, very helpful, information - and you did give the mean as well so it's not really misleading.
20k PW basic at the end of the Prem years for the likes of xxx and xxxx.
Others on less ie xxx on 9k
I still have the spreadsheets somewhere in the loft.
And why exactly do you feel obliged to leverage this confidential information to appear important? This data belongs to the club and the players concerned. Releasing it in such an offhand manner is a disgrace. I suggest you either destroy the spreadsheets or return them to the club.

How has this been played out in public? The only quote I've seen from anyone was his agent saying a fee had been agreed but the Clubs were miles apart on how that fee was to be paid and meanwhile negotiations continued between us and his client. Since then nada. Talk of 10k or 12k are just guesswork.
Also, why is it clear that COG doesn't want to play for Charlton? Is he meant to sign even if we offered say 3k pw because it's us? Do you think all other players have signed for us on first offer because we are Charlton? Would you think any less of say Morrison if you found out that when he signed for us from Sheffield Weds he turned down offers of 3k pw, then 4k pw and finally agreed on 4.5k pw? Of course not. It's negotiation. I still think O'Grady will sign. I won't think any less of him because it took a few weeks to get it over the line.

Really?
Do you think it is just part of the negotiation process or do you thin that as we get to the end of August we will be desperate enough to offer more and/or he will be desperate enough to take less?
I can't think of a situation where the negotiations have stopped and then the deal happened but that doesn't mean it can't and or won't happen.
However, I'm with you if he doesn't sign then I'm ok with that, he he does then I'm ok with that too. It is up to the club and the player to settle the wages and if COG can earn more elsewhere, or wants to earn less at Barnsley then that is his decision.
What I don't want is another Andy Gray situation where a player signs for us and then very quickly becomes 'home sick' or something like it. If COG will only move South if we pay him a fortune, and doesn't really want to, then I'd be a little concerned. I have to say though that I have no inside information at all so this is just me thinking out loud.

Seeing as he failed his personal terms with us doubt he'd try revisit it, old rumours being re-churned. Would put my money on Sheffield United if anywhere, local to him.

KHA - Mark Kinsella, Rhoys Wiggins perhaps?
Yes, of course I remember both of those. However, I thought that was about the transfer fee not the wages not being met.
I wasn't making a statement that it couldn't or wouldn't happen, it just doesn't sound, to me, like they are haggling. And I guess I was hoping that Large would be able to indicate why he thought it would happen when it looks, to me, to be dead.
Negotiations take time and a lot of what I have read on this thread is supposition and hearsay, no probs with that, but ain't gospel. I guess that Strikers by their very nature are usually bigheaded egoists so CoG will think he is the best and want the best which his agent will bolster, so he'll get offers and slowly find that they aren't as high as he expected, then reality hits and he settles for what he can get be it with us or elsewhere. Now't wrong with that we would all do it (IMHO)
Must be the shit hot striker we are getting, who was the first person to test wether shit was hot?
My Sauce (Brown in this instance) reliably informs me it was the guy who first invented the shit sandwich.... his name was Mr. Stink e Cable, the No.2 to the Earl of Sandwich

So, we spent at least 1 million on wages for JFH! 1 million for two league goals - neither of which he even celebrated.....
