I suspect that we are going to see a lot of this over the next couple of months and not just with us.
I think that player's (Agent's) wage expectations are unrealistic. We've only just had Ben Hamer tell the world that he was happy to sign a new contract in December but the club weren't interested - no mention of the money he wanted. Premier League clubs have much more cash so they can't be compared to us, but I doubt that COG is going to interest a Premier League club so both him, and Barnsley, need to be prepared for the fact that wages and transfer fees are reducing.
Interestingly I had a look at a web site yesterday that showed the players that Premier League clubs had released. There was a lot of them. I can see them moving down into the Championship which will make quality free transfers easier to pick up.
I wouldn't be, at all, surprised (and we'll never know) if COG doesn't move for a smaller fee and a lot lower wages later in the summer.
I think the days of an Agent holding clubs to ransom and then moving to another one if they can't get the money they want are soon to be gone, if not already.
If we have made an offer that the agent or player finds unacceptable then so be it, that's the nature of any job.
If his agent then hawks him around and can't find anyone to match what he wants then he may be back to us to renegotiate, in this instance we can then either start talking again or tell him to do one.
First question players from up North should be asked is if they are prepared to move down South. Similar situation to Leon Best. It is not surprising COG was expecting an increased amount as he would be uprooting his family and have to sort a house / flat out. It is likely that you can get a 10 bed mansion in Barnsley for the price of a 2 bedroom second floor flat above a kebab shop in Greenwich . At 28 COG is looking for a decent contract to take him to his 30s. Then in his 30s he is looking to step down to another Northern club. Never really looking likely the whole deal.

I agree and I don't necessarily not agree with the player for doing what is best for his family. However trying to get a wage hike just to move south when in all likelihood he's being offer 4k plus a week is probably something that us ordinary folk struggle with. Move on now I say.

What football players earn compared to what the general population earn is something, I try not to dwell on too much. TBH, I had moved on 2 weeks ago, particularly after the announcement of a fee agreed and had not talked to the player, and there was no further news after a day or two. If the thing was going to happen it would have sorted out pretty quickly. COG is probably better up North and being close to his family.
But you do need to attract players of the right quality too. It is one thing being noble, but if everybody else plays a different game you get relegated!
It was actually said that Lennie Lawrence used house price inflation as an incentive back in the 80's to attract players .So maybe CoG might wish to come south to cash in on the current boom . Look at the types of players Lennie signed Reid, Pearson , Shipley, Shirtliff etc many of them were from outside London had good careers with us and moved back to their native area.
Sky Sports Transfer Centre: Sky Sports understands that Chris O'Grady's proposed move to Charlton from Barnsley is off after he failed to agree personal terms with the Addicks. It remains to be seen whether Charlton will make an improved offer to the striker and we will keep you posted with any further developments.
Perhaps i'm being naive, but i thought part of the process was getting an idea off his agent (directly or indirectly) what sort of ballpark wages, deal etc the player would be looking for, before you get too far into the process ??

Like you I thought most if not all deals involved some form of tapping up.
If his wage demands were as high as people have suggested i'm not too bothered. He could have been good and would have been better than what we have currently, but we shouldn't break the bank for anyone unless they are guaranteed class in my opinion, which i don't feel O'Grady was. Not saying i would have been disappointed if he had signed, but just not overly bothered that he hasn't.
Sorry if I've missed anything, but how do we know he was asking for 12k?
Someone on here said so.
Exactly. This info has not come from the player, agent, clubs or anyone actually involved in the proposed move but suddenly it's gospel.
My own personal opinion is that with the current owner i really dont care how much we pay for a player as it comes from the 'network' money. Roly will be here for a few years and then on his way allowing us to be an independant football club again.

Exactly...hence my cynicism on the original thread that the leak of us agreeing terms with Barnsley was yet another sop to fans, with no real intention of making it happen...
Not convinced by him, in any case, but maybe the penny is dropping for RD and co (too late, of course) that YK was actually very good VFM compared to most...

Let him sign for Huddersfield.

There's nowt in Barnsley but those two-up, two-down back-to-back gaffs with a toilet in the back yard.

I was almost certain Roly was gonna dip into the UK transfer market and give us some truly British grit up top.
oh well, network nobodies it is!
