Don't like West Ham, but he's more likely to get first team action than if he'd taken the big payday and gone to Argggghsenal or Chelski Inc. Hope he has some fond memories of struggling against relegation with Charlton. He's worked hard and earned it, and done a lot to keep us up. Hope he moves on from Wet Spam in a season or so to something better. In a more pleasant setting. With a better manager. And nicer team mates. And better prospects. And a classier strip.
  • A good move for Diego, gutted that we have lost him but cannot begrude him the move which I think will be a good one for him. All the best Diego and thanks for last searson.
  • Hope he does well, thanks for the half season you gave us Diego.

Hopefully we get a decent fee and a good sell on in case he moves for big money in near future. Also hope he chooses to represent England as that will boost his sell-on value if he gets into the squad.
  • Lets see him defend the undefensible now!
  • good luck to the lad.
glad he didn't go to palace

  • Dry your eyes and move on.

Another one from the West Ham academy.

Exactly. No chance the Hammers won't take credit for Diego if he comes good
  • AFKA and Henners, join the Charlton site on Facebook, many more people singing from your hymnsheet over there. The way you feel about us, that's the way I feel when reading the posts on there...

  • a decent tribunal fee will soften the blow. I believe they take into account the contract he will have signed at West Ham, length, salary etc so signing a four year deal there shows they rate him highly. There will of course be add-on's for appearances, caps etc and you would hope a hefty sell-on clause. As for initial payment would everyone consider acceptable - 1m, 1.5m, 2m? Personally I think around 1.5m would reflect his current value.
  • Do West Ham have their own youth system or do they just tap other players from other clubs, buying their parents, cars, houses etc??? I don't begrudge Poyet the move but can't stand THAT club !! Glad I never became a West Ham supporter (which I nearly did until I fell out with a friend as a youngster) then went on to support Charlton via Liverpool

  • Out of interest can anyone name Poyet's agent.
  • Couldn't agree more with AFKA comments - a young player, with a chance to move up a division and increase his profile without having to uproot seems a no-brainer to me. Football careers are short, and you never know whats coming around the corner - who wouldn't want to test themselves in the premier league given half a chance? This is the game & clubs of our size and league position always run the gauntlet of losing their high profile players to bigger clubs.

Personally I wish him well, and moved on the moment he did
  • I thought he was going to a proper club.
West Ham ffs - a marginally bigger club than us. Perhaps the attraction of playing in a half empty Olympic stadium was too much for him.
Or perhaps someone he's close to has been whoring himself for a job there....
  • as opposed to a half empty valley?
  • Might get a game when wet spam get relegated.

  • Large, I spat at hi in the dinner queue (Yes I was totally out of order and I deplore it even though I was a young kid back then), went to another school and quite a few people supported Liverpool, I enjoyed watching players like Dalgleigh, Rush etc. I used to take the piss out of Chartlon until Charlton nearly went ouf of business and "felt sorry" for the but changed my allegience to Charlton when they started to play at Selhurst etc and saw how much it meant to a mate and started to go to few a games. Bless her cotton socks before then my late Nan gave me a football signed by Charlton players such as Derek Hale, etc and I thoguht "ohh geez Nan, thanks I am a Liverpool fan and I got a Charlton signed football. Last I saw the football was when I lived in Delafield Road and I had kicked it over the railway line (not intentional I hasten to add).
  • West Ham, that is annoying, any chance of the club he signs for doing the honourable thing by us is now gone.

    Can somebody please translate this...?!

    Hi AFKA,

I understand where you are coming from with the no loyalty in football and I agree to a certain extent.

However, to take a real world example, if a company trains up an employee to give them some sort of professional status then that company usually would expect their employee to stay for x amount of time or pay the company back for their expense. Now I don't know how long that period of time should be but I do feel that Poyet himself should cover the clubs costs for training him up to professional level. This should be in addition to the fee we receive from the other club as this is a separate issue.

I do not have an issue with Poyet for seeking greener pastures as we are all entitled to that. What I do have issue with is his "the truth will come out" statement. It is classless and shows a lack of respect for the club that gave him his opportunity. If I did something like that then my company would sue me and just because he is a footballer he should not be exempt from that.

I still believe, as I have since he broke into the team, that he is a championship/lower prem level player and as I said earlier the career path he is laying out for himself is not a bad one. He isn't the new Messi and he isn't the best player we have ever produced. The club will be around long after his career is over and we have a number of young players who I think will shine far more brightly than Diego will in his career.

All the best Diego but please learn to treat clubs and fans with the respect you would like to be treated with yourself.

But we ARE going to get some money to cover the cost of training him as he is under 24. That's what the compensation is for.

Whether that is enough is another question. I'd say almost certainly not but that is the system not Poyet's fault.

Why is supposedly saying he would tell the truth not treating the club and fans with respect. We don't know what has gone on and Poyet hasn't said either.

Yet he is already being called a liar and people are saying whatever he says can't be believed. Of course he will tell the story from his viewpoint just as the Club will tell it from theirs, if either say anything at all. The truth will most likely sit between the two.
The compensation is in place of the transfer fee not his side but that's just my point of view.

And all the arguing over his statement proves a lack of respect for the club and the fans.

He isn't naive, he knew it would create a reaction. He should have followed Lallana's example, despite So'ton nearly messing up his move he still put out the message thanking them for everything. He didn't threaten to air out dirty laundry (which is basically what the Poyet statement was). He may be a kid but he also wants to be a professional. So he needs to stop playing at it and start acting as one.

I don't want to argue with you over this Henry as I respect your views. Diego has created the "liar" rod for his own back but hopefully he will take the professional route and just thank the club, say how happy he is we avoided relegation and leave it at that.

I hope that makes sense :)
  • When all is said and done- he is a young lad and I suspect he will regret he didn't handle things with a bit more class when he is older and understands what that is. West Ham is probably a decent choice as he has a chance of breaking into their team. We move on - Mousa is being accused of being disloyal by Coventry fans. The circumstances are different of course.

Just wish there was a bit more honour in the game - and that is in numerous different ways.
  • Not that bothered really as i am looking forward to Cousins Buyens and Moussa linking up in midfield this season - Think some who are really annoyed are coming from the money side of things that Charlton will miss out on through a transfer fee if he was under contract.
Cannot wait for August to come, draw a line under this and move on.

He thanked @CAFCofficial for 8 great years. I haven't seen any other statement from him.

But he was being called a liar, greedy etc before the "Someone met him at a party and said...." story came out.

The money we get is a development fee for a U24. We got Moussa on a free transfer as he was out of contract. No compensation even though Coventry could really use it.
  • Glad hes gone to West Ham and glad its a mooted 4 year deal - got to mean more money for us?

Suprised he's gone to West Ham though, with big Sam in charge, though with a 4 year contract he'll probably be there longer than Sam

Worth bearing in mind (and I'm sorry if this has been said) that we've just inflicted the same on Coventry. There's a food chain, unfortunately

    Is this correct?

I thought our new signing had been trained somewhere other than Coventry
