A Travel Enquiry-Charlton to Euston after a Home game.

edited September 2013 in General Charlton
Now my summer sporting commitments are over me and my boys are up for our long pilgrimage from South West Scotland to SE7. The snag is the engineering works in the London Bridge area. The timings rail enquiries are giving make it really tight to get from Charlton to Euston. I know that they normally give far too much time to get across London on the Underground.Does anyone on here travel to Euston after home games? If they do can you let me know how long it takes please?

    Ask Weegie ?

  • Allow an hour from charlton...including walking times...quickest route is charlton to ldn bridge and then northen line to euston
  • Im a railwayman and I cant get the information I need! They are guarding the actual time it takes like the bloody crown jewels!

    Ask Weegie ?

Normally find it is cheaper to fly!

Assume you have tried TfL journey planner, Richie?

I get the train for nothing. The journey planner is showing it to take all day to get from Charlton to Euston!.I have worked at Charlton Station in the past and know my round by train. All I need is some one who travels to Euston on his/her way home to give us an idea of how long it really takes with the engineering works on!
  • Perhaps try putting Charlton to Euston in thread title - might help get some more responses?

  • Journey planner states about 41 minutes.

    tfl.gov.uk.

Very useful site, used it all the time when I was in London recently, especially with the new overground system which I didn't know very well.

Richie where are exactly are the Engineering works?

If they are between Charlton and London it might be worth going to North Greenwich (NOG ) and catching the Jubilee Line which also stops at London Bridge. If the City branch of the Northern Line is out you this would still provide connections to Euston with the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line at Waterloo and the Victoria Line at Green Park.

There is more than one bus route that does the journey after games to NOG. The only drawback to this is sometimes the traffic can be bad but I think it would only put 30 minutes on your journey.

Another option would be to 'double back' to Woolwich Arsenal and pick up the DLR to Bank although I suspect this would take longer than the other route I suggest.

Of course these options were not available when you worked at Charlton station all those years ago.

Engineering works between London Bridge and Charlton on the NR are very rare. The main issue at the moment is shut downs on the Northern Line at weekends, which seem to happen once every 3 or 4 weeks while they replace the signals. If you can avoid these weekends, the service is pretty quick. 15 minutes Euston to London Bridge, then about 20 minutes from there to Charlton (every 10 minutes on the Greenwich Line)
  • So each game you are looking at going to there are engineering works on that line? Anyway it wouldnt be on both lines so leaves either the blackheath line or Greenwich to Ldn Bridge. From Charlton station to Euston should not take you any longer than 45 mins but leave an hour to be safe.
  • I travel back that way after games. Charlton station to London Bridge is variable, but from London Bridge to Euston it'll take 20 minutes at the absolute max. Quickest way isn't northern line, though, imo - it's jubilee line west to Green Park, and then victoria line north to Euston (both lines much quicker than the really slow northern line).
  • When making this journey, I used to catch a train to Waterloo, then a cab.
Far more pleasant than the Northern Line.

    Westcombe Park. Pound mate, yeah.
  • It was only 50p from Charlton to Plumstead .I remember cos youd get jokers getting off the train in flip flops and loud shirts with a Sombero on the head and a bag full of duty frees in one hand and a stuffed donkey in the other and a great tan. Then they would ask for a single from Charlton!
