Charlton's Representation on the BBC

After coming home from a night out celebrating the 6-0 (yes six) win over Barnsley, I hoped to sit down and watch the FLS expecting Charlton to be, if not the feature, then the second game on the show. Now, I understand we are not looking to secure a few more points for the title, nor are we scrapping at tje bottom hoping to survive, but a 6-0 (yes six) win with two red cards must surely be on the top of their agenda.

So the question I pose is why is CAFC not featured as "the" game? MOTD puts the most attractive or best-to-watch game first, so why not on the FLS?

I seem to remember similar treatment last year with Huddersfield being tipped, unit the dying days, as the team to win the league.

  • Just grateful the commentator got one of "Reece" Wiggins' names right!
  • Lol draddick I thought samething
  • Plus I agree with 1992
  • Look at the prediction thread on here, many people picking low scores, 0-0. The same prediction would have been made by the programme's producer. And so there's only 1, maybe 2 at a push, cameras in the ground, no replay facilities in the scanner, nothing really. So it's just not possible to make it into a feature game. For that, you need more cameras above the halfway line to enable wide and close-up shots to be taken and a camera behind at least one goal.

THE FLS is a low budget job and has to cut down a lot of footage to get everything sorted by 11.30. To be honest, we are spoilt by how much coverage is available...
  • Reece Wiggins and Callum Harriotts. I missed the first 20 mins and Birmingham vs Leicester was on. I thought there is no way we are going to be after these so rewound it.
  • FLS has nearly always been run in order of highest to lowest place no matter what the final score is and the feature game is pre-determined as they only have one or two dedicated commentators.
  • The feature game would always be the one that is televised for those countries that buy Championship coverage as that's the one with the better commentary and more cameras and there would only be one three o'clock game. CAFC have had this privilege just once this season as far as I know, Nottingham Forest away.

I surprised they showed all six goals- must have put us above our 30 second allocation. I have made this point about the FL show before - and it isn't about us- they really need to show more of the good games. If they have an extra camera or commenator at a 0-0 they will give it more coverage, but then may gloss over a thriller. Is it because they don't want the product to outshine MOTD?

It is good we have a show, some may same. But when you think that the Championship is the 4th best supported league in the World - well it deserves a bit better. I could produce something that is all so better on the same budget - possibly less, I'm sure of that.
  • Featured games are pre determined by that point.
  • Couldn't agree anymore would of thought they would have to shuffle it about and get us on first or second

  • Bangkok is spot on - I forgot that one game gets live coverage. That's the feature game.
  • As long as they show our goals i'm not really that bothered. Watch all the Championship games anyway.
  • I found it amazing that their headlines made no mention of a 6-goal thriller. Disgraceful. I take the point that they had a minimal presence at the game, but I feel they could've moved us up the pecking order at the very least.
  • The BBC are more interested in showing minority sports

    Millsmall at home, worst luck.
  • Last week CP was interviewed extensively and there were extended highlights of the game v Leeds.

When they plan these things I guess Barnsley at home to a middle of the table side isn't that important.
  • I think it makes perfect sense for them to put us on towards the back. Lets face it there wouldn't be many Tykes that would want to stay up and watch it, whereas Charlton fans are highly unlikely to switch off no matter how bored of waiting they are.

The FLS is a vast improvement on the former ITV programme and unlike that show goes out as quickly as they can reasonably broadcast it. It isn't perfect and IMO they ought to find the budget to have Late Kick-Off on all season.

However, the BBC give us very good coverage in the South East region and carry commentary on BBC Kent, against some opposition, as well as good exposure on BBC London, whereas we are always going to be swamped by the number of clubs in the London TV region with the time they devote to regional sport.

Realistically a highlights programme covering 72 teams is always going to leave supporters of particular teams unhappy.

    That was an early kickoff.
  • My biggest problem with the show is the presenters and the format of it. I probably wouldn't mind there only being 30 seconds of Charlton highlights every week if I could still enjoy the rest of the programme but I don't. It's so dull.

The argument for that will be it's a catch 22 and that the reason for it being a minority sport is lack of coverage etc and this brilliant new coverage will boost participatants and raise the game etc.

Before being scrapped within a year when they realise it makes absolutely no difference and the demand just isn't there.
  • Still, by then Rodders Peter Shilton's record haul of caps for England will have been surpassed. It's the future.

No, really. Stop laughing at the back there.

    What's the opposition?
  • What's the opposition?

    Gillingham fans I presume.
  • I remember when MOTD used to get criticised for giving Arsenal/Utd a massive amount of time and smaller clubs only 30 seconds. Then when it went over to ITV it got even worse. I think it was just after it came back to BBC that they sorted it out and gave all games roughly the same amount of time. So now it's as if TFLS is what MOTD used to be. Hopefully they will even the Championship games out like they evened MOTD out. Although to do that with the all 3 leagues would be pretty hard.

Including in the media. Gillingham fans had Charlton excluded from Kent on Sunday on the grounds we're not local, despite the fact they were advertising at the ground and in the programme, although they include Bexley and Bromley in their circulation area and have covered Blackheath rugby.

Meridian don't cover Charlton in Kent, although i believe they do cover Bournemouth, Southampton and Swindon in their regional news for the county, but this is mainly because their "local" news is a joke. In fairness, I rarely watch Meridian these days so may be out of date.
